Age of Ultron Retcon Explained By Showrunner

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making a big change to one of its earliest movies.

The MCU timeline has come a long way since its inception in 2008 with the first Iron Man film, numerous heroes and villains have been brought to life on the big and small screens. As the franchise is currently in Phase 6, a project from Phase 2 is about to have a very different meaning to audience members.

During ScreenRant’s VisionQuest set visit, showrunner Terry Matalas opened up further on the deeper premise of the next Disney+ TV show, as they showed attending press what they were going to film on that day. Matalas explained, “The premise for this series is we are following Vision after he has been out in the world for a few years, but he is less in touch with his humanity and his past than he would like to be. So while he’s out in the world, he is in the shadows; he looks human. In fact, when we meet him, he’s working at a pub. But at night, instead of going home like everybody thinks he does, he closes the doors of the freezers to cool down his systems and retreats into the processes of his mind, where he has created this strange house, the Mindspace.”

He elaborated on how established AI characters in the MCU factor into the story, saying, “In that house, he has rescued, from the Stark compound, several AIs, that worked there: Friday, EDITH, Dum-E, U, and an older form of Jarvis, whose code he is based on, almost like a brother to him.” However, this is how things change for 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As James Spader is set to appear as Ultron in VisionQuest, Matalas elaborated on how “they are helping him understand humanity, they are company for him on this identity quest, and upstairs, what we find out is, in a New York loft-like prison, is Ultron, whom he didn’t kill without mercy at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron; he backed him up. He always felt that he didn’t want to kill Ultron; he showed mercy, and he’s still around.” However, the showrunner stressed that viewers should not expect the exact same character they met in 2015.

The creative teased that “Ultron’s not quite the guy he used to be; he’s come around a little bit on humanity, he’s trying to understand us. He’s devoured our culture and art, and has a better perspective on humanity than even Vision does. In the real world, a bounty hunter is hired to track Vision down. We don’t know why, and that leads to the discovery of his son, Tommy, existing out there.” This continues the plot point in Agatha All Along, as Billy Maximoff was able to get Tommy’s soul sent to Thomas Shepherd.

Iron Man (2008) is, in retrospect, the most consequential casting decision in modern blockbuster history — but at the time Marvel Studios and parent company Paramount were openly hostile to director Jon Favreau’s push for the lead actor he eventually got. Favreau later said he had to fight “tooth and nail” and the actor had to do a paid screen test, a screen-test deal almost unheard of for an A-lister. What was the executive objection to him?

The VisionQuest TV show has shown in its first trailer what Ultron will be like in human form, as the story takes place primarily inside Vision’s mind, which is being referred to as the Mindspace. However, audience members will have to tune in to find out what becomes of the former supervillain.

This will mark the third and final installment in the WandaVision trilogy, as Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen’s first series together kicked off the MCU’s Disney+ era during Phase 4. The 2021 show paved the way for Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha All Along as part of Phase 5, with Vision now bringing the era to an end in Phase 6.
