As one of the world’s most popular superheroes, it should come as no surprise that Batman has been the star of many different games at this point. From the popular Batman: Arkham series, to the LEGO Batman games, to tabletop experiences like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, there are plenty of ways to suit up as Gotham City’s protector and face off against his iconic rogues’ gallery. Now, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, you can experience the mean streets of Gotham through one of the most immersive gaming mediums, a tabletop RPG.
Monolith Board Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for the third season of their Batman: Gotham City Chronicles board game back in 2022. Alongside the new edition of the board game, Monolith also included a tabletop RPG version of Batman: Gotham City Chronicles that allows you to explore Gotham with a group of friends like never before. You can take on the role of existing characters, or even create your own unique Gothamites.
As the campaign for Batman: Gotham City Chronicles points out, there is a lot of role-playing potential in the setting of Gotham City. Not only can you decide to play as heroes or villains, existing or unique characters, there is also a wide range of adventure styles that make sense for the setting. If you want to go heavy on action, you could recreate a story like Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Night of the Owls event. Alternatively, you could make a more slow-moving mystery story, similar to Matt Reeves’ The Batman. You could even do a goofy Adam-West-inspired adventure.
With so much history behind Batman, you also have a lot of existing characters to use as background NPCs. Instead of populating the world with nameless or one-off characters, this allows you to create a rich environment full of realistic characters with established histories, personalities, and motivations. For anyone who has ever dreamt about getting the chance to tell their own unique Batman story, or star in one, Batman: Gotham City Chronicles is definitely worth checking out.
Right now, you can grab this Batman RPG from Monolith‘s shop in a variety of editions, as well as pick up some accessories if you’re interested. Aside from the rules and adventure books, you can also grab a GM screen, or some beautifully detailed maps featuring iconic Gotham City locations like the Bat Cave. All products come in both English and French, so make sure you are selecting the right version if you want to be able to read what you pick up.
As much fun as games like LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight can be, any video game or board game is understandably going to have some hard limits on what you can do. That’s what makes a TTRPG like Batman: Gotham City Chronicles so exciting. The only thing limiting your storytelling potential or areas to explore is your playgroup’s imagination. As a major Batman fan, I’ve always had my own ideas about stories and character interactions I’d love to see, and this game can help make them a possibility for me and my friends.
