Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached dizzying new heights at the box office.
The new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, which features Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker opposite a cast that includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and Jon Bernthal as Punisher, is the 38th installment in the superhero franchise. 2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has managed a number of astounding box office feats since it debuted on July 31, including earning the second-best domestic debut and the best global debut of all time, becoming the second-quickest movie to earn $2 billion, and becoming the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie both domestically and globally.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has now announced that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned a cumulative domestic box office gross of $858.4 million. This sees the movie inching past the all-time domestic haul of Avengers: Endgame ($858.37 million) to become the highest-grossing MCU movie in history at the domestic box office (not adjusted for inflation) and the second highest-grossing domestic release in history, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million).
Brand New Day is one of just five superhero movies to hold a place in the all-time domestic Top 10 chart. All of those titles, which slot around Star Wars, Top Gun: Maverick (No. 6), and the James Cameron movies Avatar (No. 5), Avatar: The Way of Water (No. 8), and Titanic (No. 10), are Marvel features. Avengers: Endgame will be jockeying to regain its position at No. 2 when it is re-released on September 25 ahead of its follow-up, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts on December 18. However, given the fact that Spider-Man‘s first full month in theaters isn’t even over yet and that its theatrical window should continue running for some time ahead of a digital release that isn’t expected until November, it could potentially widen the gap past the point that a re-release could possibly reach.
It remains to be seen if Spider-Man can widen that gap far enough to surpass the all-time record set by The Force Awakens in 2015. The movie, which saw the popular Star Wars franchise returning to the big screen with its first live-action feature in 10 years, was an unprecedented phenomenon. In order to unseat it as the highest-grossing movie in history at the domestic box office, Brand New Day would have to earn just under $80 million in the coming weeks.
This isn’t impossible, considering the fact that Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $39 million at the domestic box office during its fourth weekend alone. However, it will become harder and harder as domestic returns diminish. If it drops at a consistent rate (it fell roughly 45% in weekend four), it will earn less than $40 million cumulatively over the next six weekends, which would probably prevent it from climbing as high as it needs to.
