Harriet Phillips’ latest interview has made headlines amid King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Caribbean trip for a Commonwealth summit. In the past, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry faced widespread criticism for drawing media attention while another major royal event was taking place.
However, Buckingham Palace has reportedly had no similar reaction to Phillips’ 17-page feature in Hello! magazine, sparking outrage among Meghan’s supporters. A royal source told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, “No one is remotely bothered about the interview. Not only are the couple low-key, but it’s a very positive article, focusing on her charity work.”
Harriet’s husband, Peter Phillips, is currently 20th in line to the throne, compared to Harry’s fifth position. Like his cousin, Peter is a non-working royal, although he generally attracts considerably less media attention.
The reported difference in the royal family’s response prompted criticism from Meghan’s supporters on X. User @yourthickbigsis highlighted the contrasting reactions to Harriet and Meghan. She wrote, “I PROMISE you if Meghan Sussex did a SIXTEEN PAGE spread in ANY magazine and ONLY spoke about her charity work like Mrs Phillips, Richard, the rest of the British Press, and her haters alike would have had SO MUCH to say. Let’s stop pretending that Meghan gets equal treatment.”
Another supporter, @PoppyJadeboo, questioned the lack of criticism directed at Harriet, writing, “I think people are questioning, quite rightly, why Harriet isn’t being criticised for it.”
A third user, @sweetieasd, also pointed to what they viewed as a double standard. They wrote, “Nonsense I think it’s a bit of a reach to dedicate a 16 page story to her but I do find it hypocritical that has Meghan done this during the kings visit you’d all be going mental but then Harriet isn’t the biracial royal.”
