There is a version of Obsession that runs 20 minutes longer than the one that made more than $500 million worldwide, and Curry Barker would like to put it out. The writer-director told Rolling Stone that the extra footage exists and that he is fond of it, and that nobody has scheduled a release for it.

Barker is not apologizing for what played in theaters. “I think I’m pretty happy with the cut right now,” he said. “There’s things I would reshoot, but there’s not things I would change with the footage that I have.” The longer version is a separate wish: “I would say that there’s a longer version of the movie that I would love to release for sure.” He put the difference at “probably like 20 minutes.”

He was careful about the label. Barker wrote Obsession, directed it and edited it himself, so the version in theaters is already his. “I think the movie is the director’s cut. I really do. Like I did whatever I wanted for the most part,” he said. “So that is the director’s cut. But I would say extended cut for sure.”

Barker Has Trimmed This Movie Before

Material has come out of Obsession under pressure once already. At SXSW in March, Barker told Deadline that one sequence lost “about six or seven more [head] smashes” because the longer assembly was drawing an NC-17, and he said what survived was still “really f**king hardcore.” He has not said whether those smashes are among the 20 minutes.

A $750,000 Movie That Outgrossed Everything Else at Focus

Focus Features opened Obsession on May 15, after a Toronto International Film Festival premiere in September 2025, and it became the highest-grossing release in the studio’s history on a budget Barker has given as $750,000. Michael Johnston plays Bear, a music store employee who uses an object called a One Wish Willow to make his friend love him back. Inde Navarrette plays Nikki, and plays what the wish sends back in her place.

The film reaches Netflix in the United States on November 17, after premium video on demand in June, disc in July and a Peacock window that opened July 17. Barker’s next film for Focus, Anything But Ghosts, is dated May 7, 2027. The extended cut has no release date, which puts it behind a movie nobody has shot yet.
