The Journey tribute frontman and solo artist earns a Song of the Year nod in his first year entering his own music
Jason Paulino, known to fans simply as Paulino, is heading to the Grand Ole Opry House this fall with a Song of the Year – Rock Artist nomination at the 12th Annual Josie Music Awards for his single “Don’t Give Up On Me.” The nomination marks a milestone moment for an artist who has spent nearly two decades fronting one of New England’s most beloved tribute acts while quietly building a solo catalog entirely his own.
“It is truly an honor to be nominated for a Josie Award, and I’m incredibly grateful to be recognized in the first year I’ve entered my music,” Paulino said. “I’m excited to be considered alongside so many other talented artists, and I appreciate the support. Words cannot express what I am feeling. The recognition of being heard and understood in such a personal song confirmed I’m achieving my dreams and right where I’m supposed to be.”
Two Sides of One Artist
Since 2008, Paulino has served as frontman of The Great Escape: A Tribute to Journey, channeling Steve Perry’s iconic vocals for audiences at clubs, casinos, fairs, and feasts throughout Massachusetts and beyond. The band’s following has only grown over the years, with Paulino earning individual recognition along the way, including Best Male Vocalist and Best CD honors at the Worcester Music Awards.
But it’s Paulino’s identity as a solo artist that has taken center stage with this Josie nomination. “Don’t Give Up On Me” joins a body of original work that includes his CDs “Reflections of Memories” and “The World of You,” songs that let Paulino step out from behind the tribute-band spotlight and speak in his own voice. “I’d like to branch out, do my own thing and have my own identity,” he has said of the pull toward his original material.
Roots in New Bedford and Hudson
A Hudson, Massachusetts native now based in Clinton, Paulino has stayed closely tied to the region’s Portuguese-American community throughout his career, regularly headlining feasts and festivals across New Bedford. That connection continues this season, with The Great Escape performing at the Senhor da Pedra Feast at Madeira Field and returning to The Vault Music Hall and Pub in downtown New Bedford in December.
