Leave it to Scott Hoying and Mark Hoying to turn a baby name announcement into a full-blown musical production.
The couple officially introduced their newborn daughter, Birdie James Hoying, on Instagram with an elaborate original song dedicated entirely to one very important question: what do you name the child of two extremely musical dads?
The video, which is exactly as delightfully chaotic as you’d imagine, features Scott and Mark workshopping potential names through song, complete with celebrity name drops, theatrical performances, and even a surprise cameo from Robert Irwin.
After all the playful debate, the couple landed on Birdie James, a name with a sweet personal connection. According to PEOPLE, Birdie is inspired by Bye Bye Birdie and one of the first songs Scott learned to sing as a child, while James is Mark’s middle name.
The couple officially welcomed their daughter via surrogate on June 3 after a years-long journey to parenthood.
“I just wish that I had more idols that were queer and gay in media growing up that I could see families and be like, ‘Oh, my gosh, there’s an example of something I can have,’ ” Hoying told PEOPLE. “There wasn’t really a lot of that growing up. That’s why it’s really important for us that we are always posting our love… We always want to just show we are thriving, we are in love, and we have a beautiful baby, and it’s possible. And it also hopefully moves the needle for people who are like, ‘Gay, people shouldn’t be parents.’”
A Long-Awaited Dream Come True
For Scott, becoming a father is something he wasn’t always sure would be possible.
The Pentatonix singer has previously spoken about growing up without seeing many examples of openly queer families in the public eye and wondering what his own future would look like as a gay man.
According to PEOPLE, the process of expanding their family took several years and was made possible by Scott’s sister, Lauren, who volunteered to be the couple’s egg donor.
The couple has been open throughout the process, regularly sharing updates with fans and documenting exciting milestones along the way, including their now-viral music video gender reveal earlier this year.
One of Our Favorite Queer Love Stories Enters a New Era

The pair first began dating in 2017, got engaged in 2022, and tied the knot in 2023 in a stunning California wedding that felt every bit as joyful and over-the-top as fans would expect from them.
Since then, they’ve built a platform centered around celebrating queer love, family, and authenticity. Now, they’re adding “dad” to the list.
And honestly, Birdie James already seems destined to grow up in one of the most musical households imaginable.
The couple shared that their days currently consist of dance parties, piano lullabies, and soaking up every moment with their newborn daughter before their schedules eventually pick back up.
If their latest announcement proved anything, it’s that Scott and Mark are approaching parenthood the same way they’ve approached every chapter of their relationship: with a lot of love, a little theatricality, and an unapologetic sense of joy.
