The DC Universe is just getting started with Superman, as James Gunn’s comic book franchise has more projects on the way.
David Corenswet brought Krypton’s last son back to the big screen in 2025, as the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate brought a fresh take on the DC icon to life. Following its critical and commercial success, Gunn’s first film is putting the spotlight on more characters from the first film.
In a new interview with @GoodNerd23, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran was asked if the Justice League is properly coming to the DCU. The executive stressed that “we know eventually, you head in that direction. We really are just talking about those movies that we’ve announced and those projects we’ve announced.”
While listing “Supergirl, Lanterns for HBO, Clayface this fall. Man of Tomorrow, The Batman – Part II. You know we’re going to do The Brave and the Bold, which brings Batman into the DCU,” Safran also confirmed that the Superman TV show spinoff for Jimmy Olsen is going forward, “We’ve talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we’ll start shooting this year. That’s big news, by the way. I probably shouldn’t have said that.” This is also the first time that the project has been referenced as an HBO property.
With Gorilla Grodd confirmed for the offshoot, this will be the villain’s second major live-action interpretation. The last time viewers saw him outside of animation was through The Flash series in the Arrowverse with Grant Gustin on The CW, where David Sobolov voiced him.
The project was first revealed to be in the works back in November 2025, when it was described as a “true-crime docuseries” featuring Skyler Gisondo back as the DC photographer. While an official title for the drama has yet to be revealed, season 1 was said to follow Grodd,
American Vandal’s Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda were tapped as the writers and showrunners for the yet-to-be-titled show. Initially, it was stated that HBO Max would be its platform, but with Safran’s comments, it’s possible that it would air on HBO while also being released on the streaming service at the same time.
As of writing, no announcements have been made about additional actors boarding the spinoff. However, the audience should not expect to see Corenswet’s Clark Kent or Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, as the initial synopsis teased “other Daily Planet reporters (minus Lois Lane and Clark Kent), who tackle cases involving super-powered villains.”
While not confirmed, Superman movie cast members like Wendell Pierce’s Perry White, Mikaela Hoover’s Cat Grant, and Beck Bennett’s Steve Lombard are likely going to be brought back in some capacity. So far, it has not been revealed how many episodes the comic book adventure would have, since HBO hasn’t formally announced a series pick-up yet.
The DCU will resume this month with Supergirl flying into theaters on June 26, with Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El being the next major Kryptonian hero to get the spotlight. She is also coming back in the upcoming DC movie, Man of Tomorrow, which is filming right now, putting Superman and Lex Luthor together as allies against DC’s Brainiac, slated for 2027.
