As the world celebrates the 100th birthday of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe, actress and comedian Despina Mirou is paying tribute to the iconic star in the most fitting way possible—by portraying Monroe in the new television drama series N.Y. State of Mind.
For more than eight years, Mirou has become known for her acclaimed Marilyn Monroe performances at renowned venues including the Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, and theaters throughout New York and London. Her tribute performances have earned her a loyal following and the nickname “The Brunette Marilyn Monroe.”
Now, her dedication to the legendary actress has led to another major career milestone.
Director Donny Kash discovered Mirou while she was performing as Marilyn Monroe at New York City’s Producers Club. Impressed by her authenticity, charisma, and ability to embody the Hollywood icon, Kash immediately cast her in his new television series N.Y. State of Mind.
The role marks the third time Mirou has been cast as Marilyn Monroe after being discovered during a live performance.
British filmmaker Paul Wiffen previously selected her to portray Monroe in the drama film Birth of a Goddess after seeing her perform in London. Later, New York director Eric Rivas cast her as Marilyn in Enter the Requiem after watching one of her live appearances. During filming in Times Square, Mirou’s transformation into Monroe attracted crowds of onlookers who stopped to watch and photograph the scene.

Mirou stars alongside Shane Lawer and a talented ensemble cast, bringing Marilyn Monroe into a modern dramatic setting. Her ability to improvise and adapt to last-minute script changes impressed both cast and crew during production.
