Even though the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has yet to be released, players have figured out a way to play at least a small portion of it within the base game. Developer CD Projekt RED has announced a new DLC for The Witcher 3, over 11 years after the RPG was released. Called Songs of the Past, the expansion is likely taking players back to Toussaint, the setting of the highly praised Blood and Wine DLC.

Not much has been officially revealed about the content of the upcoming expansion, but the key art shows Geralt of Rivia wielding a sword that looks like a variation of Gesheft, with a wooden-like enemy flanking him. While the DLC has not had its content revealed, a fan has made a point of making a portion of it playable. The result of their work was shared by Marigoldmaribor in a post on X.

As seen in the post, the modder created the new sword featured in the DLC’s key art for the base game. According to the item’s entry on Nexus Mods, the sword is but a visual mod, used to replace the Wolf School steel swords in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The mod has variations made to serve both Geralt and Ciri in the game. Moreover, the mod is entirely free to download and use.

Nevertheless, as is the case with any type of mod for The Witcher 3, or any game at all, it should be downloaded at your own discretion and at your own risk. If you’re comfortable with the idea of modding your game, this will be an opportunity to check out the new sword featured in the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion first-hand, before the DLC itself is released for current-generation consoles and PC in 2027.

Keep in mind that this is just an aesthetic mod for the game and that it does not have any additional gameplay value – it simply covers Geralt’s and Ciri’s steel swords with a skin. Even so, it’s cool that modders have allowed players to check out what seems to be an important item, which could be Geralt’s third sword in The Witcher 3. Given its design, there are theories that it could be a third variation of Gesheft.

The DLC could even take place before Blood and Wine, and perhaps be a version of Gesheft when it was a single sword instead of two. Other theories say that the sword will be passed down from Geralt to Ciri in the expansion, as a bridge for the fourth core game. For now, it’s too early to guess appropriately, but you can already check out this piece of content arriving for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2027.
