With this year celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, it is no wonder that tons of new releases are making themselves known. Not only did Nintendo announce the upcoming release of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves in 2027, but we already know some of the exciting new additions we can expect with the launch of Gen 10, including a potential new Eevolution.
However, in the meantime, it is a brand-new fan creation that has got Pokémon lovers talking as it aims to bring the region of Johto back into the spotlight for the first time in years.
Pokémon Fans Can Finally Go Back To Johto
It is hard to believe that it has been almost two decades since Johto last appeared as a primary setting in a mainline Pokémon entry, but it is most certainly true, as we have not seen it since 2010’s Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. However, thanks to one Pokémon fan, we can now experience Johto in all its glory again thanks to the Pokémon Crystal Reflection ROM hack.
Launching just last week, Pokémon Crystal Reflection takes Pokémon Crystal and completely revolutionizes it by offering “a curated experience in the Johto region centered around two main design goals: rebalancing the difficulty, and enhancing the narrative.”
What this hack is not and will never be is a nuzlocke- or kaizo-centric experience. Simply put, if I added features or designed around those kinds of hardcore experiences, it would clash with the design already in place and make the overall experience less cohesive. That being said, the game does feature more challenging battles across the board, and nuzlocking Crystal Reflection is 100% doable. Players are free to play the game however they want—that’s part of the beauty of Pokémon!
As such, Pokémon Crystal Reflection includes new and exciting features, including: custom, handcrafted battles for every Trainer in the game, new story beats with fleshed out characters and plot points, reworked move pools, rebalancing, reimagined wild encounters, revamped Trainer AI, and much more.
Pokémon Crystal Reflection Is One Of Many ROM Hacks
With Pokémon Crystal Reflection being created by someone with experience working for an AAA company, it just goes to show what is possible for the Pokémon franchise when heart and soul is put into its creations. As such, this is just an example of many of the ROM hacks currently available for Pokémon, aiming to give fans what they have been calling out for for the past three decades, and better yet, allowing them to experience stories and experiences for absolutely free.
As an example, if you are interested in exploring ROM hacks which purely focus on the Johto region, you are in luck as we have compiled a list of five of the best. So, if you are ever missing some of the older Pokémon Gens, or just need to scratch that itch ahead of the launch of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, then look no further.
