During a conversation with Gayety, Kate Hudson and Brenda Song opened up about the friendship between their Running Point characters, dreamed up chaotic crossovers with some of their most iconic past roles, and revealed the unexpected industry they think their characters would completely dominate outside the world of sports.
Running Point follows Isla Gordon (Hudson), a former party girl who is unexpectedly put in charge of the legendary LA Waves basketball franchise after her brother Cam (Justin Theroux) is forced into rehab. The comedy series, created by Mindy Kaling, mixes workplace chaos, family dysfunction, and heartfelt friendship against the backdrop of professional sports.
A major highlight of the show is the friendship between Isla and Ali (Brenda Song), whose bond becomes the emotional backbone as they navigate the male-dominated world of professional basketball. While Isla balances chaotic family dynamics, demanding players, and an increasingly messy personal life, Ali remains a constant source of support and confidence by her side
When asked which characters from their past roles would have friendships as strong as those of their Running Point characters, Hudson immediately had ideas.

“I think Bride Wars, Annie [Hathaway] and I, I think that’s a ride or die,” Hudson said, referring to the friendship between Liv and Emma.
Song quickly jumped in with her own crossover possibilities, imagining what would happen if some of their most iconic characters ever crossed paths.
“Imagine Andy [Anderson] meeting London [Tipton],” Song said, referencing characters from their most iconic roles. Song is known for playing London Tipton, the spoiled heriess in the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, while Hudson is known for her role in the rom-com alongside Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. “Andy interviewing London or doing a piece on her. That’d be really fun.”
The conversation only got more chaotic from there as the pair continued brainstorming dream friendships between characters across their filmographies. Hudson even suggested that Penny Lane from Almost Famous would probably get along with Mary-Anne from The Last Showgirl.
“Oh, that would be trouble though,” Song joked.

Kate Hudson and Brenda Song Think Their Characters Belong in Fashion
Although Running Point centers around navigating a male-dominated sports world, Hudson and Song revealed they already know where their characters would thrive next.
“Imagine them running like a clothing company or even a fashion magazine,” Song said. “How fun would that be?”
Hudson immediately agreed. “We’d be great at that,” she said.
The idea spiraled into a full fantasy about showing up courtside in couture looks while secretly running the fashion world behind the scenes. “In couture? In our office, coming to courtside?” Song joked. “That’d be hilarious.”
Honestly, they may be onto something.

Their Real-Life Friendship is Just as Strong
Beyond the jokes and crossover ideas, the conversation also revealed just how supportive the two actors are behind the scenes.
Song shared that Hudson has become one of her go-to people for advice.
“The thing about Kate, if you ask her one thing about what kind of flowers those are, she’ll be like, ‘Hold on.’ And in 10 minutes, she’ll know everything about that flower,” Song said. “She’s a plethora of information.”
Hudson, meanwhile, praised Song for always showing up for the people she cares about.
“Brenda shows up. She shows up for you,” Hudson said. “Whether it be your birthday party … or whether it be an event or something that you’re throwing or charity, Brenda is always there for you as a girlfriend.”
That chemistry and genuine admiration for one another clearly translate on screen in Running Point, where their characters continue to navigate ambition, friendship, and high-pressure environments together.
And if the fashion magazine spinoff ever happens, we already know who will be first in line to watch. Running Point Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on April 23.
