Wheel Of Time Episode 4: What Happens To Logain Next In The Books

Movies

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wheel of Time season 1, episode 4.

After The Wheel of Time episode 4’s ending, Robert Jordan’s books indicate that Logain (Álvaro Morte) has an important future in Amazon’s TV series; here’s what happens next. In the show, Logain is one of the most powerful male channelers that the Aes Sedai have ever encountered, but by the end of Wheel of Time episode 4, he no longer holds that status. After attacking the Aes Sedai’s temporary base camp, Logain is stripped of all his abilities and cut off from the True Source by Liandrin (Kate Fleetwood) and the others in an act known as “gentling.”

In both the Wheel of Time books and the small-screen adaptation, Logain Ablar is a False Dragon who inspires hundreds to follow him into battle until he is captured by the Aes Sedai. In the first book in the series, The Eye of the World, it is said that Logain is in the process of being transported to the White Tower to be gentled. This event is confirmed in the second book, The Great Hunt. Amazon’s show changes the circumstances of this moment in Logain’s life by forcing the Aes Sedai into gentling him early. Wheel of Time episode 4 ends with Logain crying on the ground, which is consistent with what Thom (Alexandre Willaume) says earlier in the episode about his nephew’s reaction when he was cut off from the One Power.

What came next for Logain in the Wheel of Time books provides clues about the story the show will offer his character now that he doesn’t have the One Power. In The Great Hunt, he becomes a prisoner in the White Tower, where he lives in a constant state of depression. Logain doesn’t become important again until the fourth book, The Shadow Rising, when he escapes from the White Tower and finds an unlikely ally in Siuan Sanche. In the books, Siuan is the Amyrlin Seat, which is the title given to the leader of the Aes Sedai. When she is removed from her position and forced to leave Tar Valon, she agrees to an alliance with Logain, who she promises to help get revenge on those who gentled him.

Wheel of Time Logain

From that point on, Logain is treated as a major character in the Wheel of Time books. He remains in the company of Siuan for a while longer and eventually crosses into Nynaeve’s story. In the sixth book, The Lord of Chaos, Nynaeve accidentally uses a new version of Healing on him. With the One Power, she restores his connection to the True Source, thus giving him back all of his original abilities. Prior to that moment, it was believed that gentling was permanent and couldn’t be undone, but Nynaeve shocks everyone – Logain included – by pulling it off. Sometime later, Logain joins the side of the real Dragon Reborn and is instrumental to the fight against the Dark One and his minions.

As noted above, it takes a great deal of time before Logain is able to enter the picture in a meaningful way, which raises questions about what direction the Wheel of Time show will take with his character going forward. It remains to be seen if it will speed up his story to keep him relevant, or send him down a different course. Either way, the books show that there’s still plenty of story left to tell with its interpretation of the False Dragon. Nynaeve’s growing affinity with the One Power, the impending introduction of Sophie Okonedo’s Siuan Sanche, and the emergence of the true Dragon Reborn are all likely to shape Logain’s story in The Wheel of Time.
