Jon Favreau says that The Mandalorian is what fans wanted from Boba Fett. The Disney+ inaugural series, which also happened to be the first Star Wars live-action project, debuted last year to critical and mass acclaim. With that, a second season is already in the pipeline slated to release this October.
The Mandalorian introduces fans to lone-gunslinger Din Djarin played by Pedro Pascal as he becomes the unexpected caretaker a Force-sensitive infant from the same species as Jedi Master Yoda, The Child aka Baby Yoda. The first season tackles their adventures as they fend off Imperial remnants wanting the mysterious being. The Mandalorian season 2 is expected to continue that narrative but with some additional complications, including villain Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) possessing the Darksaber. Just like the origins of Baby Yoda, viewers are also interested in learning more about Din, an entirely new Star Wars character – although when the project was first announced, there was as an assumption that its lead character would be a more familiar face in Boba Fett.

While the titular hero in The Mandalorian is totally separate from the original trilogy character, Favreau explained in a recent interview with ATX TV (via ComicBook) that Boba Fett actually inspired their eagerness to create the Disney+ show. The filmmakers shared that the project was borne out of their childhood dreams of seeing more of Boba Fett on the screen following his debut – something that didn’t happen – at least not yet.
“We all loved Boba Fett, but we never got as much of him as we all wanted. He came to unceremonious and in ‘Return of the Jedi.’ We wanted somebody that could kind of live up to what we had hoped to see when we were younger.”
The success of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story motivated Lucasfilm to develop a string of Star Wars spinoff movies, including one focusing on Boba Fett with Josh Trank at the helm. However, plans changed after a series of unfortunate events such as the director walking away from the project, followed by the lackluster box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story that forced the studio to reassess their anthology blueprint. There’s been no word yet on the supposed movie, although fans are excited about reports the character has an appearance in The Mandalorian season 2 with Temuera Morrison set to play the role in the streaming show. Aside from Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) are also expected to make their live-action debut in season 2.
At this point, it’s currently unknown what role Boba Fett will play in The Mandalorian. Some are theorizing that his appearance in the show will be a springboard for his own TV show or even movie, which isn’t outside the realm of possibility. That being said, if Din has the type of narrative that Favreau and his team dreamed about Boba Fett having in the past, it’s curious what the latter’s potential solo adventures might be. It’s important for Lucasfilm to have a clear distinction between the two characters, otherwise, their respective projects might be too reminiscent of each other’s.
