Pokemon Sword & Shield’s G-Max Moves Sound Incredibly Overpowered

Movies

During the Nintendo Direct Mini today it was revealed that Pokemon Sword & Shield would be introducing brand new G-Max moves, and they seem way overpowered. These new abilities should not be confused with the Gigantamax and Dynamax abilities that are already a part of the base game. The G-Max moves will be a part of the first Sword & Shield DLC that releases this June.

The Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing abilities are a huge part of Pokemon Sword & Shield, which give Pokemon access to massive size and power. All Pokemon have the ability to Dynamax, but only a few can further power up by using the Gigantamax skill. Sadly the introduction of these new abilities caused Gamefreak to drop mechanics like Mega Evolutions. Many feel that the new mechanics are also slightly redundant. Dynamaxing feels tacked on and pointless, when every Pokemon in the game can access this ability fairly easily.

In a new reveal, Nintendo has announced the new G-Max moves, and reception hasn’t been completely positive so far. G-Max moves are only available for the three starter Pokemon, and when the new attacks are used they ignore any of the opponents abilities. This means that G-Max can ignore type advantages and abilities like Protect. Already these abilities seem massively overpowered, and has the potential to completely ruin the balance of Pokemon Sword & Shield, even with competitive measures already in place to prevent some of the game’s most egregious comps from being legal.

There are other features being added alongside G-Max moves that look promising though. There are more Trainer Outfits and League Card Designs coming to the game that will allow players to have more customization options. There were many new outfits revealed during the Nintendo Direct video with some resembling the clothes of Chairman Rose and Team Yell.  The last thing that was shown off was gameplay of the new mythical Pokemon Kubfu. During the trailer Kubfu was shown using rock type moves and evolving into Urshifu. Anyone who purchases the Sword & Shield Expansion Pass will gain access to all of the new content.

The Pokemon games are always evolving and changing gameplay in between new titles in the series. This is one of the first times that players will be getting a true DLC for a Pokemon game that shakes the gameplay up this much. The new G-Max moves seem like they will have the potential to either change the game for the better or completely wreck the balance entirely. It will be interesting to see which route Pokemon Sword & Shield goes when the DLC releases later this year.
