But first, you’ve got to choose facial hair for your face shape — that’s what really decides whether a look works on you, long before you reach for a razor or a beard oil.

Three options for you in this round-up – three paths concerning the hair on our face.

Facial Hair For Your Face Shape: Start Here

Before you pick a path, here’s the part most guys skip.

Facial hair isn’t only about whether you CAN grow it. It’s about balancing the face you already have.

The goal is simple. You want to nudge your face toward an oval — add length where you’re wide, add width where you’re long, add a hard edge where you’re soft.

Here’s how that plays out.

Round face — you want length, not width. Grow it fuller at the chin and keep the cheeks tight. A short boxed beard or a goatee stretches a round face and finally gives you a jaw.

Square face — you’ve already got the angles, so don’t fight them. Keep the sides short and let a little weight build at the chin to soften that strong jaw. Stubble or a trimmed short beard is your friend.

Long or oblong face — do the opposite. Keep it short at the chin and let the sides fill in. A full beard with weight on the cheeks makes a long face read wider and shorter. Skip the pointy goatee — it drags your face down.

Oval face — lucky you. Almost anything works, so pick based on your growth and your life, not your face.

Heart-shaped face — wide forehead, narrow chin. Build weight down at the jaw to balance the top. A fuller chin beard evens you out.

Two rules beat all of this. Keep your neckline clean — right at the top of the Adam’s apple, never up on the jaw. And dress for the face you have NOW — don’t plan your look around the beard you swear you’ll grow over the next three months.

And if you’re just getting started, two things nobody warns you about. First, the itch around week two is normal and it passes — don’t quit there. Second, a patchy beard at three weeks isn’t a patchy beard, it’s an unfinished one.

What facial hair style suits my face shape?

Aim to balance your face toward an oval. Round faces want length at the chin — a short boxed beard or a goatee. Long faces want fullness on the sides and no extra length at the chin. How long does it take to grow a full beard?

For most men, a real full beard takes eight to twelve weeks. You’ll hit an itchy, awkward stage around week two — that’s normal, and it passes if you leave it alone. By week six, most of the spots that looked patchy have usually filled in.

What should I do about a patchy beard?

Give it time first — a lot of patchy beards are just short beards that haven’t connected yet. If it’s still thin at eight weeks, work with it instead of against it: keep it shorter so the density reads even, or switch to a goatee or stubble that plays to where you actually grow.

Should I go clean-shaven, stubble, or a full beard?

It comes down to three things: your face shape, how well you grow, and how much upkeep you’ll actually do. Clean-shaven reads sharpest for formal work and needs a good shave to look right. Stubble is the lowest-maintenance win. A full beard makes the biggest statement, but only pays off if you grow well and keep it groomed.
