More than 50 years after The Rocky Horror Picture Show first shocked and delighted audiences, a new documentary is celebrating the strange, sexy, and deeply queer legacy of the midnight movie phenomenon. And now, you can watch all of the magic come to life from the comfort of your home.
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror arrives on digital platforms June 2, giving fans an intimate look at how a tiny London stage production transformed into one of the most beloved cult films of all time. Directed by Linus O’Brien, the documentary features interviews with original creator Richard O’Brien alongside stars like Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, producer Lou Adler, and even Trixie Mattel and Jack Black.
The 89-minute documentary explores the rise, fall, and resurrection of Rocky Horror, tracing its journey from fringe theater oddity to a cultural institution fueled by midnight screenings, audience participation, and generations of queer fans who found community inside its glitter-covered chaos.

“That point when you’re trying to figure things out, you could go to some place where there are a lot of people trying to figure that out,” Sarandon says in the trailer. “You can be there, and you can be accepted for who you are.”
The film also digs into why Rocky Horror still resonates decades later. Long before mainstream media embraced LGBTQ+ stories, the movie created a rebellious space for outsiders, self-expression, gender fluidity, and sexual freedom. That legacy remains especially meaningful today as queer audiences continue to connect with its message of liberation and acceptance.
At the center of it all remains Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played by Curry in one of cinema’s most iconic queer performances. His unforgettable line, “Don’t dream it, be it,” became more than a catchphrase — it became a rallying cry for generations of fans who saw themselves reflected in the film’s unapologetic weirdness.
For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Strange Journey looks like a loving celebration of the movie that helped redefine cult cinema and queer pop culture forever. The documentary premiered at SXSW in 2025 before heading to theaters and special-event screenings across the country.
Now, fans can finally bring the celebration home when Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror lands on digital June 2.
