The release of Grand Theft Auto VI was always going to be a big one, but few could have predicted quite how seismic it is going to be. Other developers are changing their plans to avoid clashing with its arrival, while analysts continue to predict billions of dollars in sales in the first few weeks after release.
GTA VI is almost certainly going to be one of the most commercially successful games ever when all is said and done, and most of that comes down to the sheer number of players who want to get involved. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a console exclusive for a long while yet, and if PC players want to get involved by buying new hardware, the cost is going to be very significant.
GTA 6 Just Got Way More Expensive For A Lot Of You
In case you missed it, Sony recently announced that prices for their consoles were being raised with the price for the base PS5 going up to $649.99/£549.99, while the PS5 Pro is now retailing for a fairly staggering $899.99/£789.99.
The fact that consoles are actually more expensive to buy new, years after releasing is pretty galling for the consumer, and it will likely have the knock-on effect of locking out a ton of gamers who had otherwise intended on making the journey across to console, purely to play GTA VI when it drops.
The console’s price was also raised in all other regions, including Japan and Europe, with market conditions, tariffs and global conflicts blamed for the increase in production and trading costs.
Those who would consider turning to an Xbox Series X in these trying times have every right to do so, but you won’t find any relief in terms of cost, with the equivalent hardware costing the same as the PlayStation. The only cheaper way in would be to buy a Series S, though it’s a fairly safe assumption that you’ll have to deal with some major performance downgrades.
GTA 6 Lands On November 19, So Get Saving
All of that leads to the unfortunate point where those without a console will either have to start saving up to play GTA VI, or accept their fate and wait for it to come out on PC in a year or two. That would come with the unfortunate issue of having to watch everyone else play it when it releases, but at least there are some other great games on the way in the meantime.
