With all of the kerfuffle going on at Xbox over the last year or two, it’s easy to forget just how many massive franchises they are in control of moving forward, from The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, to World of Warcraft and the old classics like Gears of War, Fable, and Halo.
The change of leadership at the top of the ladder has seemingly brought about the first green shoots of change, with reports that they feel the current price of Game Pass is too expensive. At the same time, conversations are starting to grow around exclusivity that could stop millions of PlayStation players from enjoying the major titles above at launch.
Xbox Could Reverse Its Stance On Exclusivity
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post detailing a quote from Jez Corden on the Xbox Two Podcast, in which he claimed that there are “very, very, very big discussions about exclusivity stuff going on right now.”
If you’ve been paying attention to the console ecosystem over the last few years, you’ll likely have noticed that Xbox, in particular, has been moving away from exclusivity in an attempt to maximize its profits from publishing. This actually works out well for the consumer for obvious reasons, but some Xbox fans have been critical about the company handing over their best games to other platforms at the same time.
New head honcho Asha Sharma has since stated that she “hears” fans who are calling for Xbox exclusive titles to remain exclusive, and that could mark a concerted effort to head back in the other direction moving forward.
The obvious knock-on effect here is that it could majorly affect the release plans of first-party Xbox studios, including Betheda Entertainment, Activision Blizzard et Al. In all likelihood, a future where The Elder Scrolls VI doesn’t release on PlayStation ever is unlikely, but a period of exclusivity could easily be a thing, leaving those without an Xbox or PC in the proverbial mud for a few hours.
The fact remains that The Elder Scrolls VI is going to be one of the biggest releases of all time when Bethesda Entertainment does deign to give it to us, and those invested in the company likely won’t want to miss out on a player base as big as the one that PlayStation boasts. With Project Helix also in the works, who knows what platform we will be on at that point, so we’ll just have to sit tight and wait to see how the cards fall.
