Randy Edelman is the multi-talented singer-songwriter who you might know for his contributions to the discographies of The Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, and Dionne Warwick, among others, as well as composing for such epic films as Last of the Mohicans and Dragonheart. His newest single “Birds of Freedom” is a prelude to both his new full- length EP “Waltzing On A High Wire,” due September 6th, and his upcoming Carnegie Hall live show on December 8th. The song is hooky, melancholic, and quietly moving.
The chords that open “Birds of Freedom” have a flamenco quality to them, lending the song a swooning and romantic quality from the very get-go. The song, about the search for peace and unity in a dangerous world, builds in intensity from there until it’s become a full-on ballad, with Randy’s voice carrying the tune through its emotional crescendo and some affecting chord changes.
Before his Carnegie debut this December, Mr. Edelman will be honored by the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and perform on stage for them. I wait on his new album release intently.
