Kingsman Director Really Wants To Reboot Wolverine | Screen Rant

Movies

Matthew Vaughn, director of the Kingsman series, has suggested he would love a chance to return to the X-Men franchise so he could reboot Wolverine. Vaughn, who is no stranger to recasting younger versions of iconic X-Men characters, helmed 2011’s X-Men: First Class, reinvigorating interest in the franchise after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand left a sour taste in the mouths of many devout fans. Casting James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence as younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique, Vaughn’s X-Men film was lauded by many a fresh new chapter in the beloved Marvel series.

While Vaughn had a chance to reinvent some of the biggest names in the X-Men roster throughout his tenure, the one character he did not get a chance to work with in any great detail was that of the adamantium claw wielding berserker, Wolverine. Played by Australian actor Hugh Jackman since the original 2000 film, despite returning in a much larger capacity for 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jackman’s Wolverine only had a brief cameo appearance in Vaughn’s film. As undoubtedly the most recognizable character from the entire franchise, Jackman’s Wolverine was also the only X-Men member to get not just one, but three of his own solo spinoff films.

At a recent promotional event for Vaughan’s upcoming Kingsman prequel The King’s Man, Comicbook.com reports that Vaughan was asked which X-Men character he would pick for a team if given the opportunity to direct a reboot. Without hesitation, Vaughan singled in on Wolverine as the character he’d most like to reboot. Check out his comments below:

There’s only one that I didn’t get to play with properly and I would have loved to… Hugh Jackman was so good and did such a good job doing it. But to cast the young (Wolverine), the reboot, that would be fun, I think, and it could go into such a different direction where Hugh took it as well. I think Hugh knocked it out of the park but I think out of (all of the X-Men) that’s the character that weirdly, I don’t know why I get drawn to. Yeah, Wolverine.

x-men first class hugh jackman as wolverine

With the rights to the X-Men reverting to Marvel Studios after 2019’s Fox/Disney merger, Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting any news as to when they might expect Marvel’s mutant superteam to make their MCU debut. While many fans have indelibly connected Jackman with the role that catapulted him into superstardom, others are keen to see a more comic-accurate version of Weapon X on the screen. At well over 6 feet tall, over the years, Jackman’s height has often been a sticking point for comic fans for the character who is as well known for his short stature as his prickly nature.

While there have been numerous whispers of Jackman potentially reprising the role for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if Marvel Studios is thinking far enough ahead, recasting a younger actor in the role will certainly increase Wolverine’s MCU longevity. Vaughn’s own top picks for the role, both Taron Egerton and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have each previously been floated as potential replacements by fans over the years, though the latter’s turn as Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) in Avengers: Age of Ultron may discount him from becoming the fan-favorite X-Man. Either way, X-Men fans all seem to agree that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, audiences get to see Wolverine back on the big screen, regardless of who plays him.
