Custom Minecraft Skybox Lets You Build On A Halo Ring

Movies

A Minecraft player recently showcased their custom skybox, which looks like a Halo series ring. The massive megastructures from the titular first-person shooter are ringworlds that are able to support life, but the Halo rings also double as super weapons that are ironically capable of destroying all life in the galaxy. The installations have become one of the most recognizable elements from the Halo franchise, apart from its main protagonist Master Chief and AI character Cortana – the latter of which even became the official name for series-owner Microsoft’s own virtual assistant technology.

The Halo rings and the battle to prevent their activation (by the Covenant, one of the antagonists of the series) were two focal points for the first three Halo games. One of the ringworlds, Installation 07, is also the main setting for the latest game in the series, which can be seen in Halo Infinite’s box art. According to developer 343 Studios, the plot of Halo Infinite will focus on Master Chief’s quest to find a new AI called “The Weapon,” which may assist him in locating Cortana.

Reddit user Endermankid563 shared a few images of their project on the Minecraft subreddit, showing the Halo ring skybox from several angles in their custom world. According to their post, they used a combination of Blender, GIMP, the 1.18 and 1.16.5 version of Minecraft – as well as a few mods, namely Xaero’s Worldmap and OptiFine – to achieve the impressive visual effect. Endermankid563 adds that they still have a lot of work to do on the project before they plan to make the custom skybox available to others. Some fellow Redditors suggested using the “Arriving on Halo” mission from the first game as a good reference for the scale of the ring.

While some commenters also pointed out that the Halo texture pack for Minecraft on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One supposedly already includes a Halo ring skybox, Endermankid563 revealed that it was actually removed from the pack some time ago. It’s unclear when and why Microsoft decided to remove the Halo ring from the MinecraftHalo DLC. Fortunately, Minecraft allows for a lot of creativity, even allowing one player to recreate the “Pillars Of Creation” space photo, so fans like Endermankid563 are able to recreate the Halo ring skybox even after its omission from the official texture pack.

Endermankid563’s work is pretty impressive and it would be great to see it once it’s completed. Hopefully, other modders will be inspired by it and create a version that players can actually run around, which will certainly be a challenging – but seemingly possible - endeavor. After all, Minecraft creations have achieved such feats and more.
