Henry Golding Says There’s No GI Joe Without Cobra | Screen Rant

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins star, Henry Golding, believes G.I. Joe isn’t anything without Cobra. In two months, the most popular G.I. Joe member is getting an origin story on the big screen. The first trailer released this past Sunday, teasing the character’s journey to becoming the iconic silent warrior.

Cobra is synonymous to G.I. Joe as Decepticons are to Transformers. Every G.I. Joe production and show has featured the terrorist organization as the threat. Cobra was given an origin in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which saw a scientist named Rex declare himself commander in the climax. Four years later in G.I. Joe Retaliation, Cobra Commander sports a more familiar appearance, and his organization manages to nuke Central London off the map. At its core, Cobra in any given continuity is the polar opposite of everything G.I. Joe stands for. It’s no surprise it has remained the consistent threat in all G.I. Joe media. One of Cobra’s esteemed agents, Baroness, will appear in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Henry Golding, the actor bringing the character of Snake Eyes to life in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie, discusses Cobra appearing in the story. Check out Golding’s quote below:

Without giving away too much spoilers… Cobra is very much an organization that is present in this movie, The Baroness being one of its agents. How do I say this? I’m just trying to think about the pitfalls of where I can put my foot in my mouth. But no, the GI Joe is nothing without Cobra.

Golding certainly isn’t wrong in his assessment about Cobra and G.I. Joe. Cobra is pretty much assumed to appear whenever a potential G.I. Joe project is announced. It will be interesting seeing how much of Cobra is presented in the story. The movie could show Storm Shadow joining Cobra’s ranks as he does in other continuities, but that remains to be seen. The film will begin the dynamic between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Besides Baroness, no other Cobra agents are confirmed to appear.

The big question many fans are likely having is if the Snake Eyes movie will successfully jump-start a new series of G.I. Joe films. The previous two live-action endeavors weren’t huge hits. The upcoming film could offer a fresh start with a bigger emphasis on compelling dialogue. The world of G.I. Joe looks to expand with another character as well. A live-action Amazon series with G.I. Joe’s Lady Jaye is reportedly in development. As a property, G.I. Joe has a lot of potential for engaging storylines and action. Hopefully, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will do well critically and be a financial hit to encourage more projects on the war against Cobra.
