Mandalorian Season 3: Bill Burr Hopes His Star Wars Character Returns

Movies

Bill Burr hopes his Star Wars character returns in The Mandalorian. In The Mandalorian season 1, Burr portrayed Mayfeld, a former Galactic Empire sharpshooter who led a team of mercenaries recruited by Ranzar Malk (Mark Boone Jr). When fans last saw Mayfeld, the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) had managed to defeat him and his team and trapped them in a cell on a prison transport ship.

Known for his roles in Breaking Bad and F Is For Family, Burr made a big splash in the Mandalorian episode titled “The Prisoner.” Though Burr reportedly won’t return for The Mandalorian season 2, he’s been keeping busy with a role in this summer’s The King of Staten Island. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian is showing no signs of slowing down, with season 3 already in the works months before season 2 premieres. And since Disney+’s flagship program has a bright future, Burr is hopeful he can be a part of it.

In an interview with MovieWeb, Burr was asked about his possible Star Wars future, a prospect that made him excited. At first, Burr said Mayfield “seems like he’s pretty buried.” However, since the character is still alive, it leaves the door open for a return. Burr mentioned “breaking out of jail and getting revenge” or a spinoff as possibilities for Mayfield.

While very little information is available about The Mandalorian‘s future after the second season, the show has been named the most in-demand new streaming service original and scored 15 Emmy nominations this year, so the possibility of a spinoff is not out of the picture. Viewers likely wouldn’t mind seeing Burr back in the Star Wars galaxy, either. “The Prisoner” was one of season 1’s most well-received episodes, in part because Burr’s comedic style brought an edge to Mayfield’s sarcastic personality. Considering the history between Mayfield and Din Djarin, there’d likely be a compelling story to explore there.

Whether or not Mayfield returns remains to be seen. When The Mandalorian season 2 premieres in October, it’ll be bringing established legacy characters like Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett to the fold. The show clearly has a lot on its plate by integrating these names and others, so Mayfield probably isn’t a top priority for the creative team right now. Nevertheless, with no Star Wars movies scheduled for release until 2023, producers can spend more time mapping out what’s next for The Mandalorian and surprising fans with exciting, unexpected storylines revolving around Din Djarin and The Child.
