Cyberpunk 2077: What Weapon Classes Are & How They Work

Movies

As the November 2020 release date of Cyberpunk 2077 draws closer, developer CD Projekt has begun rolling out episodes of Night City Wire, a video series providing a look at the various features of the upcoming open-world action-adventure RPG. In their most recent episode, CD Projekt revealed more information about what kinds of weapons players can expect in the game and where to find them.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest game from CD Projekt, the developers behind the hit series The Witcher. Set in the far future in Night City, players will take the role of V, a low-level mercenary who will eventually become a force to be reckoned with. Cyberpunk 2077 has generated buzz with claims of incredibly detailed world-building and customization, and with the splashy reveal at E3 2019 that Keanu Reeves would be portraying Johnny Silverhand, a major character in the game.

During a recent episode of Night City Wire, developers took a closer look at the weapon classes that will be in Cyberpunk 2077. The game will feature three types of guns: Power Weapons, Tech Weapons, and Smart Weapons. Power Weapons are the closest to today’s traditional projectile weapons, with the added twist that players can ricochet bullets to hit enemies. Tech Weapons use electromagnetic power to give bullets extra punch, allowing players to blast through walls or cover. Lastly, Smart Weapons are able to track targets and aim bullets for players, making it easier to hit a nimble enemy or one hiding around a corner. Weapons can be upgraded with attachments, such as scopes or silencers, and software mods, which are chips that change stats like rate of fire, damage, or accuracy. In addition to guns, Cyberpunk 2077 also features Melee Weapons, Throwables, and Cyberware (which includes a Mantis Blade for skewering enemies), but CD Projekt hasn’t yet revealed more about these categories.

Where Will You Find Cyberpunk 2077’s Weapons

All of these weapon classes will be wrapped up in traditional RPG mechanics in Cyberpunk 2077. V will be able to become more proficient in weapons over the course of the game, increasing things like reload speed, aim speed, weapon accuracy and more. Weapons can be bought from vendors or looted off enemies and come in the usual spectrum of common, uncommon, rare and legendary. Legendary weapons will be unique items with abilities that cannot be found on other weapons. These legendary weapons will only be found on certain NPCs, which might put players in the dilemma of choosing whether or not to kill an NPC to acquire an extra special gun.

While Cyberpunk 2077’s approach to weapons is fairly standard, there’s enough spin here to give players new ways to approach combat, particularly when it comes to enemies hiding behind cover. Instead of charging a fortified position, a player can line up a ricochet shot to hit a hard-to-reach enemy, or use a Smart Weapon to remove aim from the equation entirely. Night City Wire showed off a variety of play styles to choose from, including a Smart Weapon grenade launcher that allows the player to casually lob an explosive and have it directly impact a distant enemy’s head. While the trade-offs to the different weapon types remain to be seen, players will have plenty of gun loot to chase when Cyberpunk 2077 drops this holiday season.
