Nozuki Could Be Godzilla’s OTHER Ancient Rival In The MonsterVerse

Movies

Nozuki, Godzilla vs. Kong‘s mysterious new Titan, could be another ancient rival to Godzilla in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. After all, there is substantial evidence that multiple ancient rivalries exist in the MonsterVerse. Godzilla: King of the Monsters already pit Godzilla against one ancient nemesis, King Ghidorah, an alien dragon from a distant planet, and a Titan that Godzilla fought and defeated thousands of years ago.

The fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong, will presumably feature at least three potential opponents for Godzilla. As the title and synopsis reveals, he’ll be going up against the King of Skull Island in a “spectacular battle for the ages“, but that won’t be all. Also joining the fray are Godzilla’s robotic counterpart, Mechagodzilla (the fourth Toho kaiju to appear in the MonsterVerse), and Nozuki, an original Titan who has the appearance of a winged serpent. Both Mechagodzilla and Nozuki were spoiled by toy leaks for Godzilla vs. Kong. Exactly how they’ll fit into the movie’s plot remains a secret, but it’s been speculated that one or both of them will force a team-up between the two titular Titans.

It’s possible that Nozuki has history with Godzilla, as one of the newspaper headlines in the credits of King of the Monsters reveals that more ancient Titan rivalries are being investigated. Godzilla and King Ghidorah’s wasn’t the only one, apparently. This headline could also be referring to Godzilla and Kong’s species, since a cave painting suggests that Godzilla met one of his ancestors. In the redacted text, a line mentions “ancients rivalries lurking“, immediately followed by a set of coordinates that point to Göbleki Tepe in Turkey. Göbleki Tepe is believed to be the oldest temple in the world.

The walls of Göbleki Tepe are curiously covered in images of snakes [via The Tepe Telegrams]. This isn’t unusual, as snakes are common in this area, but the depiction of snakes at Göbleki Tepe could hold a much different meaning in the MonsterVerse. These snake images could represent Nozuki, who the worshipers in the temple may have revered as one of their gods. It certainly does seem plausible that Nozuki could be this mysterious Titan teased in the redacted text. If so, what does the line “ancient rivalries lurking” mean for his role in Godzilla vs. Kong? Since that line is followed by the coordinates, it could be that the credits are saying that this is the location of an additional rival to Godzilla.

Godzilla and Nozuki may have reasons to be enemies, since the line after the coordinates given tease that once “the fires awaken“, a threat could “send our civilization into collapse“. As a Titan who tries to maintain balance in the world, Godzilla would naturally do battle with any giant monster who would attempt to cause such a catastrophe. As for why Nozuki may soon become a problem for Godzilla – and possibly Kong as well - Monarch could be at fault. Their exploration into the Hollow Earth tunnels in Godzilla vs. Kong to find the secrets of the Titans may inadvertently awaken Nozuki from his slumber.
