Unused Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 Songs Could Be In GOTG 3

Movies

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 director, James Gunn, shares a playlist of songs from his master list for Meredith Quill’s favorite songs, some of which he hints could appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Currently, there’s no set release date for Guardians 3, but plans are in motion for production to begin this year after Gunn has finished work on The Suicide Squad. Assuming the movie can stick to that schedule – Gunn recently said Guardians 3 has not been delayed, at least for the time being – then it will most likely hit theaters in 2023, early 2024 at the latest.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the closure of movie theaters worldwide in response, movie studios have had to reschedule the release dates for most of their upcoming films. Marvel’s entire slate of the MCU Phase 4 had to be reshuffled and now only one MCU movie is releasing this year, Black Widow. As long as Marvel can keep to these new release dates, though, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shouldn’t be affected. That’s good news, too, because the road to getting Gunn back to write and direct Guardians 3 was not an easy one. Luckily, all was resolved and Gunn is returning for Guardians 3, and as such, he’ll once again be providing it will a killer soundtrack of songs from 1970s and ’80s.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2‘s soundtracks, Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, are perfectly curated selections that not only give scenes great music, they reflect the characters’ emotional journeys. The songs Gunn includes are purposefully chosen, not to mention just some of his all time favorite tunes. In the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the song selection has the added bonus of being songs passed on to Peter “Star-Lord” Quill from his mother, Meredith, adding to their poignancy. As a tease of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s eventual soundtrack, Gunn shared a playlist of songs from his master list of Meredith’s favorite songs that he originally considered for Guardians 1 and 2, but ultimately didn’t use. You can jam out to Gunn’s selection of songs from Meredith Quill’s Complete Awesome Mix, below.

Along with sharing the music – a gift of “joyousness during our time in quarantine,” Gunn called it, referencing the ongoing stay at home orders in place because of the coronavirus pandemic – Gunn hinted that some of these songs could appear on the Awesome Mix for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He isn’t guaranteeing that any of them will, but he isn’t taking them off the table either. Some notable songs in the collection include David Bowie’s “Suffragette City”, Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”, and Queen’s “Somebody To Love”, but the whole playlist is an excellent mix of just the kind of songs you’d expect Meredith to dig. (She really had excellent taste.) Previously, Gunn also suggested that the music for Guardians 3 could be influence by Yondu’s Zune, in which case, Vol. 3 may include music from both Peter’s mom and dad.

Given that Guardians 3 is still a ways off, it’s no surprise there’s little known about its plot. Presumably, the movie will pick up with the Guardian’s following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Gamora, tragically, dies during the events of the previous Avengers movie, Infinity War, but a past version of Gamora is brought to the present in Endgame, suggesting a version Gamora could return to the team. Endgame also ends with Thor joining the Guardians, and it remains possible their characters could appear in Thor: Love and Thunder and he in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That’s all a ways off in the future, so in the meantime, enjoy Gunn’s latest sampling from Meredith Quill’s Complete Awesome Mix.
