Why Venom Is Trending on Twitter And What’s Really in That Viral Video

Movies

Fans of Venom were caught off guard thanks to a viral video that then made both “venom” and “symbiote” trending topics on Twitter. As a classic species of the Marvel Comics, the Symbiotes are parasites which feed off the emotions of their hosts and tend to make them make trouble for themselves in order to sweeten the taste. Venom is the most well-known of the Symbiotes and a regular antagonist of Spider-Man in the comics.

Venom received a standalone film in the Sony Marvel Universe in 2018. It explored the character after he’s made Eddie Brock his host, with Tom Hardy in the title role. Venom did well at the box office, though critics generally gave it poor reviews. However, a sequel, Venom 2, is still on the way. As of now, it’s slated for October, though that could change depending on the outcome of the coronavirus pandemic. Sony has already shifted the release date for fellow Sony Marvel film Morbius by a full seven months.

“Venom” hit the number one trending topic slot on Twitter in America, and the word “symbiote” came in at number three. This was after a slimy black mass of what appears to be a group of creatures were caught on video writhing around on a rock. In the video, widely circulating around Twitter, a visibly upset man tugs and pokes at the substance before he saws it apart. But it reforms itself, making it look like Venom in his native form. There is no indication where the video was shot. While the unnamed substance looks like the product of special effects, it’s actually a bootlace worm, which grow to extraordinary lengths like the one seen in the video. Check it out below:

This Twitter video and trend will likely get fans excited for Venom 2, which has been teased via recent set photos that made their way onto the Internet. They’ve already gotten a look at Woody Harrelson’s new Cletus Kasady haircut, as well as images that seemed to show Eddie Brock being rescued by another symbiote. Fans are also still hopeful that Tom Holland may make an appearance as Spider-Man, though it isn’t known for sure. At any rate, it seems likely the two will meet at some point, considering how often their paths cross in the comics.

Though there’s a reasonable explanation for the video making its way around Twitter, it’s still fun to imagine the creature having superhero origins. It’s no wonder it resonated with fans. It may be a strange reason for Venom to trend on Twitter, but Sony probably appreciates the unexpected free marketing for Venom 2.
