Eternals: Every Major Character Missing From The Marvel Movie

Movies

There are a few major Eternals characters who are currently missing from the upcoming Marvel movie. Directed by Chloe Zhao, Eternals is the second movie on Marvel’s Phase 4 slate and is scheduled to be released in November 2020 (unless its delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak). The cosmic epic, which is expected to span thousands of years, tells the story of a race of super-powered, immortal aliens who were sent to Earth by god-like beings known as the Celestials. The Eternals are on a mission to defeat their greatest enemies, the Deviants.

The star-studded cast of Eternals  – which includes names like Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington, and Salma Hayek – represents a large number of key Eternals characters from the comics. Set to make their live-action debut in the movie are Ikaris (Madden), the main protagonist from the comics, along with Thena (Jolie), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Ajak (Hayek), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and more. Even minor Eternals characters like Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) are getting in on the action. Though some are being gender-swapped for the MCU, the selection of characters suggests that Marvel Studios won’t exclude much from the comics.

Most of the important characters from the Eternals comics will appear in the movie, but the casting announcements that have been made so far don’t account for all of them. There are still a few notable absences, and that may or may not change as more details are revealed in the months to come. Here’s every major Eternals character still missing from the MCU movie.

Zuras

In Marvel Comics, Zuras is the Eternals’ equivalent to the Asgardians’ Odin. It was Zuras who established a group of Eternals on Earth, while others broke off and traveled to different corners of the universe. As a character who has been the leader of the Earth-based Eternals for thousands of years, Zuras is a wise, yet proud ruler who exerts his will over his subjects when he feels it necessary. Zuras, who has worked to keep the Eternals hidden from the humans, once banished one of their own, Gilgamesh, for meddling too much in human affairs. Zuras doesn’t usually get involved in the fighting, but when he does, the comics have shown him to be among the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

So why hasn’t anything been said about Zuras in Marvel’s Eternals movie? For one thing, Salma Hayek’s Ajak is being described as the Eternals’ leader, so it could be that Zuras has been removed from the story altogether so that Ajak can fill that role instead. As for why that could be the case, it’s possible that Marvel wants to avoid comparisons to the MCU’s Odin. Even so, Zuras could still be mentioned, since the comic book version of Zuras is Thena’s father. He could be referenced as Ajak’s predecessor.

Starfox

Starfox Marvel Avengers

Starfox is the brother of Thanos and an important member of the Avengers in the 1980s. The adventurous Eternal, infamous for his ability to telepathically influence the pleasure center of the brain, is a member of a different branch of the Eternals. Like Thanos, Starfox was born and raised on Saturn’s moon, Titan. Thanos destroyed the Eternal colony on Titan, but Starfox was one of the survivors. After traveling to Earth, Starfox began a career as a superhero, and thanks to all his powers as an Eternal, was able to find much success as an Avenger.

Interestingly, Starfox is one of the most well-known Eternals, despite the fact that thus far he doesn’t seem to have a part in the Marvel movie. For fans familiar with the character, that’s not such a strange thing. Starfox has met and interacted with major Eternals like Ikaris and Sersi, but as a Titanian Eternal, he really isn’t a part of the story, so even though Marvel could rewrite his backstory and bring him to down Earth, it does make sense for him not to be included.

Ransak the Reject

Originally referred to simply as “The Reject” in Jack Kirby’s original Eternals comic book series, Ransak the Reject is an interesting addition to the Eternals cast in the comics. Though Ransak bears the appearance of an ordinary human, he is in fact a Deviant, a subterranean species deemed too hideous to live alongside humans. Due to their monstrous looks, the Deviants have to hide from society. Embittered by their own defects, the Deviants shunned Ransak, who by some genetic accident looks identical to a human. Their treatment of him filled him with hatred, causing him to grow up into a cold, ruthless, savage who behaves like an animal in battle. Ransak was forced by the Deviants to fend for his life as a gladiator.

After being found by Thena, Ransak was taken from the Deviants’ homeworld and allowed a good life with the Eternals, who were the first people who didn’t treat him like an abomination. Since then, Ransak has been an ally to the Eternals who has played key roles in several of their stories. It’s not clear if Ransak the Reject will be one of the Deviants appearing in the movie. His chances may depend on Marvel’s approach to the Deviants, who are confirmed to be getting a major redesign. It’s possible that the MCU’s take on the Eternals may not leave any room for a human Deviant like Ransak.

Karkas

In the comic books, Ransak is one half of a duo of Deviant heroes, the other half being Karkas, a gigantic, red monster who is considered to be even more grotesque than most Deviants. Contrary to his appearance, Karkas is an extremely articulate beast who has what he calls “the soul of a poet“. Karkas and Ransak are an interesting pair because the two are polar opposites in two different ways. Ransak, who is described as attractive by human standards, acts like an animal, whereas as the well-mannered Karkas is burdened by his monstrous appearance.

Will Karkas and his bromance with Ransak the Reject make it in the MCU? Karkas could be included, but similar to the situation with Ransak, that may be dependent on the movie’s portrayal of the Deviants. Marvel may not have any intention of introducing any heroic Deviants right now. The Deviants may strictly be villains in the Eternals movie, with a potential sequel painting them in a better light.

Warlord Kro

Kro is the main antagonist in most Eternals comics and the main love interest of Thena, which could be seen as an odd combination. The red-skinned Deviant, who has used his looks to impersonate the Devil, stands apart from the rest of his race as a Deviant who shares the Eternals’ longevity. Kro has lived for thousands of years, but he keeps this a secret from his people. Centuries ago, he engaged in a forbidden affair with Thena, and in the modern era, Kro has exploited Thena’s affection for him for personal gain.

The selfish and power-hungry Deviant has used Thena to keep himself out of harm’s way, much to the chagrin of Ikaris, who has always been wary of the Deviants and their schemes. Kro, who has led the Deviants in the past, has often led his people in battle against the Eternals. His presence in the comics is generally a source of conflict for Ikaris and Thena, as they have differing opinions of the Deviant warlord. As Kro is one of their biggest foes, it would be a big surprise if he wasn’t featured in Marvel’s Eternals movie.
