AOC Defends Trans Rights in Maine: “I’m a Girl’s Girl”

LGBTQ Entertainment News

A trans student at the University of Southern Maine asked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez why Democrats were treating trans people as a “losing issue.” Her answer came immediately: “They’re wrong.”

Ocasio-Cortez was speaking at an Oct. 22 town hall in Portland alongside Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson. The recording on AOC’s YouTube channel includes the question at 1:49:41. The student described feeling abandoned by the party and asked what she would say to that.

She apologized for politicians who “scare so easily after an election.” Then she made the case for defending trans people.

“I’m a girl’s girl”

“The moment you compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of every citizen in America,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“I don’t support the rights of trans people just to protect my own rights, but I support the rights of trans women because I’m a girl’s girl.” The crowd laughed.

The answer covered more than sports. She linked trans rights to reproductive care, medical privacy and protections for sexual assault survivors. Sports authorities, doctors and trans people, she said, should work together on athletic rules.

Title IX and the staffing cuts

AOC pointed to Cornell University’s handling of an alleged sexual assault as she discussed Title IX. A woman sued Cornell and seven fraternity members in September. The men deny her allegations, AP reported. Title IX addresses sex discrimination in education, including sexual harassment and assault.

Her claim that the administration “quietly defunded” enforcement needs context. Federal auditors found that 299 civil rights staff went on paid leave in March 2025. Seven regional offices closed. The workers were recalled in December, and their layoff actions were rescinded in January 2026.

The department said it had kept up with its workload. GAO found its cost-and-savings analysis incomplete. Her description leaves out the workers’ return and the reversal of those layoff actions.

Checking the trans population figure

AOC initially said trans people make up about 1% of Americans, then accepted 3% from the audience. The Williams Institute’s August 2025 estimates distinguish between age groups: 0.8% of adults and 3.3% of teens ages 13 to 17. Across everyone 13 and older, the estimate is 1%, or about 2.8 million people.

Democrats disagree on trans rights

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he hasn’t “been able to figure out how to make it fair” for trans girls to compete against cis girls. James Talarico, the party’s Senate nominee in Texas, said he’d “missed the mark” on past statements. He said he would vote for a national ban on gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called state bans on trans athletes “bullying.” Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey credited his primary win partly to standing up for trans rights. Rep. Seth Moulton, who said he didn’t want his daughters competing against trans athletes, lost that primary. AP reported the party’s disagreements in September.

Ocasio-Cortez has pushed back before. In November 2024, Rep. Nancy Mace sought to keep incoming Rep. Sarah McBride out of women’s restrooms at the Capitol. AOC told reporters: “They’re endangering women, they’re endangering girls of all kinds and everybody should reject it.” Speaker Mike Johnson imposed a restroom policy anyway.

I want politicians to remember the student behind this exchange. They asked whether their rights were worth defending. That shouldn’t require courage to answer.
