New Nintendo Hardware Officially Confirmed, Coming 2027

Movies

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already been an enormously successful console for the video game giant, selling 20 million copies (as of Q1 2026) in a short space of time to dominate the handheld market. Though that pales in comparison to the staggering 155 million copies the original managed to ship, it’s still well on its way to being one of the most successful consoles of all time.

That said, there are still plenty of areas for improvement that we will likely see at some point further down the line. We’re still yet to get an OLED model of the console, which is something they will almost certainly produce, and there are plenty of ways performance can be fine tuned moving forward, if they so desire.

Now, news is emerging that there will be a different batch of hardware releasing in short order, but the changes aren’t quite as stark as many would want at this point.

Over on Twitter/X, Centro LEAKS, who have become known for sharing insight on Nintendo and their games, recently shared a post in which they contended that a new version of the Switch 2 could be on the way. It has now emerged that is absolutely true, but the only change is fairly minor, as the profile confirmed in a follow-up statement.

“Nintendo has now confirmed that the leaked new Switch 2 model we covered back in January is real: it will be a revision specifically for Europe and the only difference will be that the console will now have a removable battery,” the post reads.

It’s an interesting enough change, but it’s a far cry from something very exciting, like a better screen. That said, it does open up the chance to swap pre-charged batteries out if you’re going on a trip and don’t have access to a power port, which should be good for the consumer base overall.

Sadly, it seems like it will be region restricted for the time being, so consumers in the United States won’t be able to take advantage of the new design. That said, it is likely to roll out elsewhere at some point in the relatively near future, so if you are very keen on the removable battery, it’s best to sit tight.

The change has been made as part of ongoing regulations in the EU, which will require batteries to be safely removable from devices like the Nintendo Switch 2. That requirement is being enforced from February 18, 2027, so the new consoles will come into play before then.
