Unreleased Songs by Can’s Holger Czukay Collected on New Album

Music

A new album of unreleased Holger Czukay music will see the light of day on March 28. Gvoon – Brennung 1, coming out via Grönland, collects just more than an hour of music the Can co-founder recorded in the 1990s, during a period working in Cologne alongside younger techno producers who helped verse him in new music technology.

Czukay did not share his work until some 20 years later, when Arthur Schmidt, an artist known as Gvoon, adopted it to soundtrack an art installation based on an interrogation room; Schmidt’s stories of his time in East German prisons had inspired Czukay to record the tracks in the first place. The music has now been mastered by Dirk Dresselhaus in honor of what would be the late Czukay’s 87th birthday next March. Watch a video drawn from the art installation, soundtracked by music from the album, below.
