Rabidly anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene recently claimed that “a top LGBTQ priority” is putting porn in elementary schools. And to prove her point, she posted a video of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) speaking against book banning at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Numerous commenters called out Greene for lying.

“The Democrats have made p*rn in elementary schools a top LGBTQ priority,” Greene wrote Wednesday via X. “When they’re caught, they claim we want to ‘ban books.’ Democrats are the party of pedophiles.”

“These censorious efforts will not end with book bans,” the letter states.

Her comment re-posted a similar claim from Chaya Raichik, who goes by Libs of TikTok on social media. Raichik’s posts vilifying LGBTQ+ people and allies have led to numerous death threats against children and children’s hospitals.

“Here’s your daily reminder that when [Democrats] accuse us of banning books they’re referring to graphic p**n books that are available to kids in schools across the country,” Raichik wrote in a post that included a video of Gov. Shapiro’s recent DNC speech, in which he said, “It’s not freedom to tell our children what books they’re allowed to read.”

Raichik’s post included images of several LGBTQ+ books—including Gender Queer, This Book is Gay, Flamer, and Let’s Talk About It. All four books include explicit discussions of sex and images of nudity; some recount personal experiences and others have educational purposes.

In a follow-up post, Greene wrote, “Democrats can’t read the pornographic books they want in elementary schools at the DNC…if they did, all networks would IMMEDIATELY halt coverage or else they’d be fined.”

Numerous commenters called out Greene and Raichick for spreading anti-LGBTQ+ misinformation. In reality, most book bans in the U.S. have come from a small number of conservative groups, and the bans mostly target books that discuss race or LGBTQ+ issues, including historic works like The Color Purple and The Diary of Anne Frank.

Some reactions to Greene’s posts pointed out that the president she supports so much, Donald Trump, has his own sexually explicit past that is inappropriate for children to read about. Others pointed out that Greene had extramarital affairs while married, showed sexually explicit pics several times in a congressional hearing, that Nazis burned sexually educational books and that the Bible—a book beloved by conservative Christians—is sexually explicit and violent.
