“She Makes Beauty” by Marc Bosserman

Music, News

On paper, there’s really nothing unconventional about “She Makes Beauty,” the new single from rising singer/songwriter Marc Bosserman, but upon closer inspection, this song seems just a bit more elaborate in style than what the status quo is calling for in 2022.

Although he approaches his lyrics with a humble tone that suits the tempo of the music quite well, there’s a bit of urgency behind the statements Bosserman is making at the microphone here – and he doesn’t want it to go unnoticed by us, his target audience. Rather than trying to go after a scene or create a message so broad that it cannot exist outside the realm of the radio, this singer/songwriter wants to address emotions from within in this single, which breeds an interesting form of insular poetry with a sharp melodic shape that I haven’t had the chance to experience in a lot of other music out this month. There’s no arguing whether or not this player has a substantial amount of talent, especially for what the studio needs to breathe, and he’s putting it to good use for everyone to appreciate with what he does in “She Makes Beauty.”

Keeping a concept simple is something I really wish a lot of artists didn’t struggle with to the degree that they do in the mainstream, but alas, there’s something more than a couple of big-name performers could learn from Marc Bosserman’s work in this track. He isn’t trying to overemphasize any element of the music, but instead suggest balance through a heavier arrangement than a lot of other pop composers would know what to do with on stage (or in the studio, for that matter). His vocal is unassumingly sweet where the groove is pretty black and white, and this division is just enough to create some positive friction on the other side of the beat where there might not have been any to begin with. This mix, overall, is rather unremarkable, but it doesn’t have to sport any over-the-top fireworks to get our attention. That’s the beauty of having a performer as good as this one is running the controls in the studio; it’s raw, crisp, and unfiltered where it ought to be.

Marc Bosserman is more than just another singer/songwriter coming up the ranks in 2022; to me, he’s a musician who desires to be vulnerable with his audience where others only want to take their message so far, remaining guarded behind the virtuosity of their own work. This isn’t just untrue of what Bosserman does in “She Makes Beauty,” but it in fact goes against the construct of his entire identity in the song. He makes putting his heart on the line a key theme of this single in numerous ways, and if he’s able to do the same thing in another performance, whether it be a ballad or something just a little more stirring on both ends, he’s going to gain a following a lot faster than any critics would have initially expected he could.
