BOTW 2 Should Be The Middle Part Of A Full Zelda Trilogy

Movies

The upcoming sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will continue the story of Link and Princess Zelda, but the story should continue further, leading into a third entry in the series, and creating a Legend of Zelda trilogy. The sequel to Breath of the Wild will technically be the third game in the series, as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was a spin-off prequel that showed the original war against Ganon. However, the ending of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity clearly establishes it as non-canon, as a time traveler prevents the events of Breath of the Wild from happening.

The Legend of Zelda series has had many sequels, but no trilogies to date. The first two entries in the series were direct sequels, while Majora’s Mask was a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. If The Legend of Zelda timeline placement in certain books is to be believed, then there technically has been a trilogy, as the books have established that the same Link from A Link to the Past was the one who starred in Link’s Awakening and the Oracle games. This information only comes from outside sources that were released well after the fact, and there’s no in-game information to support the idea of the four games being connected.

The sequel to Breath of the Wild is set to be one of the biggest Nintendo games releasing in 2022 and the few tantalizing glimpses of the story and changes to Hyrule have fans excited about the next entry in the series. The story doesn’t have to end there though. There is room for a third entry in the Breath of the Wild series.

The success of the original Breath of the Wild and the Nintendo Switch itself would ensure that there is enough support within Nintendo to release more entries in the series, especially with Age of Calamity selling so well, despite being a spin-off. Turning Breath of the Wild into a trilogy gives the developers their first chance to tell an epic story across several games and to set up elements for a future game in the second entry. A third BOTW game could also have playable Princess Zelda in a starring role, following a shock ending in the second game, where Link dies facing Ganondorf, similar to the Fallen Hero timeline. An ending where Ganondorf is victorious and not imprisoned by Zelda (even if Link does survive) would also allow Hyrule to be transformed into a hellish landscape, which could be the setting for the final game.

Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch and it helped ship a lot of consoles. Part of the initial buzz for the Switch surrounded the fact that such an amazing-looking game could also be played on a portable system. Breath of the Wild went on to be one of the best selling Switch games and is one of the most highly-acclaimed titles on the system. The sequel to Breath of the Wild is launching during the middle of the Switch’s lifespan, so a third game could close out the Switch generation with the bang.
