Doja Cat is the subject of a new Rolling Stone cover story. In the article, written by EJ Dickson, the singer addresses her professional relationship with Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, who has worked on some of her biggest songs, including “Say So,” “Best Friend,” and “Kiss Me More.” Doja Cat has also been signed to Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records since 2013.

“I haven’t worked with him in a very long time,” Doja Cat told Rolling Stone. “A lot of those songs were…. There’s shit that he’s credited for, where I’m like, ‘Hmm, I don’t know, I don’t know if you did anything on that.’” Doja Cat added, “The point is he’s gotten some credit for shit. And, you know, it’s whatever. I don’t think I need to work with him again. I don’t think I need to work with him in the future. I know that…. I think it was definitely nice of me to work with him.”

In a follow-up email to Rolling Stone, Doja Cat stated:

I wanted to clarify something that I had been thinking about since the interview. When asked about Luke I may have said something that someone could interpret as me saying that he had taken credit on things he didn’t deserve to. I just want to be clear that I have no firsthand knowledge of that being the case and I don’t want to participate in the rumor mill. The credits on my music are accurate, and I don’t want to imply anything else.

A representative for Dr. Luke told Rolling Stone: “Luke is very proud of Amala (Doja Cat) and the work they have done together.” The representative also said that Dr. Luke has “written a uniquely large amount of hits and career-defining songs, and continues to do so,” adding, “As it is his daily work, his practice, as is the industry’s, is to receive publishing when he creates songs.”

Dr. Luke has been in a legal battle with Kesha since 2014. The singer has alleged that Dr. Luke abused her. The producer has denied the allegations, some of which have been dismissed in court. Dr. Luke has also sued Kesha for defamation.

Kemosabe and RCA Records have released all three of Doja Cat’s studio albums—2018’s Amala, 2019’s Hot Pink, and 2021’s Planet Her—as well as Doja Cat’s 2014 debut Purr! EP. Dr. Luke has received three Grammy nominations for his work with Doja Cat.
