Skyrim Update Fixes Game-Breaking PlayStation Glitch & Other Bugs

A brand-new The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim updated has rolled out, bringing about several bug fixes to its Special and Anniversary editions, as well as fixing the glitch that bricks game saves on PlayStation platforms. The second remastered rerelease, Skyrim: Anniversary Edition launched on the title’s 10th anniversary last month on last-gen and current-generation consoles, as well as PC. Players who already owned a copy of the Special Edition on last-generation consoles received a free next-gen upgrade on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One X/S. Aside from visual and framerate improvements, new features and additions were be also added, including 500 creation club elements and a new fishing mechanic.

While Bethesda continues to update several classic titles from its roster to accommodate accessibility and fix numerous ongoing technical issues, some of its patches seem to break other parts of the games completely. Back in October, the studio updated Fallout 3‘s broken Steam port on PC, completely removing Games For Windows Live and making the game once again playable almost 12 years after its initial release. Though aimed at fixing issues in the title, the patch made modifications inaccessible and broke game saves. Fallout 3‘s issue was resolved later on by its modding community, but Skyrim received a similar Anniversary Edition update that brought numerous bugs and disrupted thousands of mods that modders are still trying to fully restore.

Patch 1.22 for Skyrim: Special Edition and Skyrim: Anniversary Edition has officially released on all platforms – including PC – with varied file sizes. Posted on Bethesda‘s official Discord server (via Dualshockers), the update fixes several bugs riddling the game including the glitch that destroys PlayStation players’ game saves. Due to the update’s complexity, popular Bethesda Youtuber Juicehead further explained it by stating that the patch changes for each platform but ultimately reduces the instance of said PlayStation bug. This issue occurs when players add additional content or mods to the title and when attempting to save, the console warns that there is insufficient memory before completely bricking games and disabling the save system.

Though the issue has been known for years, the bug started becoming more common following Skyrim: Anniversary Edition‘s latest patch - which was intended to fix black screen errors. Bethesda however doesn’t fully guarantee the bug will go away for some players but is working on permanently squashing it. Besides the critical patch for PlayStation users, the update also brings Creation Club and texture fixes, lighting issues, crashing when spamming the fireball spell, and many more on all platforms. Sadly, the downside is that mods are once again broken and players will need to wait for a new version of the Script Extender, as the downgrade doesn’t work until modders update it.

Ten years after its release, Skyrim continues to receive updates to improve its overall quality and fix ongoing issues. Its newest update critically aims at the long-going PlayStation saves bug, but could possibly result in more issues for players in the future like previous updates. December marks the first-month threshold of the Anniversary Edition, so players can expect more updates in the future.
