AC Infinity Is NOT Free-To-Play, Ubisoft Confirms | Screen Rant

The project codenamed Assassin’s Creed Infinity will not take the form of a free-to-play game, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Ubisoft confirmed AC Infinity earlier this summer following Bloomberg reporting about an upcoming entry with a live-service model attached. The publisher wouldn’t disclose much in the way of concrete details but noted that Assassin’s Creed’s primary studio, Ubisoft Montréal, is helming the new adventure alongside its Québec-based sister studio.

Marc-Alexis Côté, Executive Producer on the brand, will lead this all-new cross-studio collaboration. Ubisoft assigned Senior Producer duties to the Montréal group’s Julien Laferrière, who’s been with the IP since 2007. Meanwhile, Splinter Cell veteran Clint Hocking and AC Syndicate World Director Jonathan Dumont were brought aboard to serve as creative leads. Little else is known about the supposed live-service title, yet rumors and alleged leaks abound. One such rumor claims AC Infinity will feature remade missions from older adventures and boast a structure modeled after AC Unity’s Helix Rifts. Fortunately, the latest financial report out of Ubisoft confirms one notable detail about the still-mysterious project.

During an earnings call today, October 28, Yves Guillemot (via VGC) revealed that AC Infinity will come packed with lots of “narrative elements” and won’t be free-to-play. The collaboration between Montréal and Québec should culminate in a “very innovative game,” he added, but explained that everything players love about the franchise will remain intact. Guillemot told investors, “it’s going to be a huge game but with lots of elements that already exist in the games that we published in the past.” In addition, Ubisoft CFO Frédérick Duguet reaffirmed that Infinity presently remains in the incipient stages of production.

Assassin’s Creed faithful are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief at such news. Here’s to hoping AC Infinity isn’t secretly another one of Ubisoft’s battle royale attempts, though. In all seriousness, Guillemot’s comments about narrative elements also suggest that while the series continues to evolve, story will always remain central to the overarching experience.

AC Infinity may not represent the be-all and end-all of Assassin’s Creed either, if details from a purported leak prove accurate. Apparently, the publisher intends to continue producing regular, open-world AC titles alongside the codenamed endeavor from Montréal and Québec. Ubisoft hasn’t corroborated this claim at the time of writing, however.
