SPOILERS for The Tomorrow War

The Tomorrow War director, Chris McKay, teased that there might be an alien-centric sequel in the future. The Tomorrow War was released this month on Amazon Prime, after the company bought the film from Paramount during the coronavirus pandemic. The sci-fi action film follows Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) after he is drafted to fight a war in the future against alien invaders, the Whitespikes.

The Tomorrow War opened to mixed reviews on the Amazon platform. Early reviews mainly criticized the execution of the film. Despite McKay being a capable director and Zach Dean’s screenplay holding an strong premise, the film fell flat with plot holes, inconsistencies, meaningless shooting and CGI action, and an inability to explore the deeper themes of the story. However, others praised the film for McKay’s directing (likening him to Zack Snyder and Michael Bay), the family-centric storyline, and the stellar performance of Sam Richardson as Charlie. Despite the mixed reception, McKay thinks their might be more to The Tomorrow War story.

As reported by ComicBook, McKay has teased an alien-centric follow-up to The Tomorrow War. McKay revealed his enthusiasm for the film’s world-building process and how it included much discussion of the Whitespikes. As part of the process, he and the crew discussed the Whitespikes’ origins and history and what their world looked like. He thinks a sequel might provide a fun opportunity to further study the culture and customs of the Whitespikes. Check out his statement below:

We had such a fun design process. We talked about the world of these creatures, where they came from, how they were created or raised, and how they were maybe being used. I like world-building experiments, especially when you have the potential of some kind of time travel. I think that a sequel could go in a lot of fun areas and the ethnographic study of the Whitespikes in their world and where they came from, and what their purpose was, and all of that kind of thing. So yeah, I think that could be a lot of fun. And with this cast, too, we’re just getting started.

The Tomorrow War Whitespikes Ship

Indeed, The Tomorrow War ending could potentially lend itself to a sequel in the future. It left viewers with many nagging questions after the timeline is essentially rewritten to make the apocalyptic event never happen. Aside from creating a paradox, it is also concerning that many soldiers returned to the present day with knowledge of their futures and the potential to change their fates and disrupt the timeline. A sequel focused on the impact of the timeline changes could be intriguing. Meanwhile, the reveal that the Whitespikes had been dormant on Earth for thousands of years would also make their history an interesting topic for a prequel.

It remains to be seen if there will be a follow-up to The Tomorrow War, but it seems McKay is prepared if it does happen. As discussed by critics, the film’s script held quite a bit of potential and a sequel would allow for further exploration of it. Meanwhile, the alien origins idea would also be appealing, as any story that feature another species naturally sparks curiosity about their origins. For example, the origins of A Quiet Place’s monsters has lent itself to many theories and spin-off suggestions. Similarly, the Whitespikes would be one of the most interesting aspect of The Tomorrow War to explore, as they were truly the backbone of the plot. Considering The Tomorrow War’s mixed reviews, a sequel might be beneficial as it could expand on the original film’s strong premise and improve upon its shortcomings.
