Darrell Kelley’s “Wasn’t Justified”

Darrell Kelley’s “Wasn’t Justified”

Music, News, Reality TV

Darrell Kelley’s, “Wasn’t Justified” is deliberately and dutifully transparent. It tells the story of Andrew Brown. JR, a North Carolina man who was killed by police. It was alleged that he used his a car as a deadly weapon, posing lethal harm to police. Andrew Brown JR was an African American male, and there is at least some speculation that this factored into his death. Those responsible for Andrew’s death were relieved of any wrong doing, much to the grievances of Andrew’s family.

Darrell Kelley is an R&B artist who respectfully declines to use anything in the form of symbolism to tell this story on “Wasn’t Justified.” He is as candid and factual as you will ever hear on a recorded piece of music. The track is wonderfully mixed, with a soulful and almost hypnotic backdrop. It’s a strangely tranquil listening experience, that is perhaps intentionally antithetical to the notion that Andrew’s memory is not peacefully resolved. “Wasn’t Justified” is a recommended track, that comes with a disclaimer of discretion and unpleasant truths.

What motivates Kelley to use his music to draw attention to these cases is unknown, aside from the obvious crusade for justice and prevention. It’s easy to conclude that this sort of violence and prejudice has affected Kelley on a very intimate basis. His passion for this matter is unequivocal, and you can’t help but be inspired by it. It’s almost as though, he has a singular focus, and that his fervor is derived from a sense of urgency or even desperation. Desperation in the sense that if this isn’t addressed and neutralized, sooner than later, than the repercussions could be irrevocable.

From all indicators, Andrew Brown’s case is no longer active and is considered closed by the courts. It’s unclear if Brown’s family has initiated the appeal process, and if so, what potential impediments they may incur, if so. What is certain, is that the family has gone on record as vehemently objecting the verdict. The Brown family believes that the evidence speaks for itself, and that an egregious miscarriage of justice has transpired. This is a terribly sad and tragic situation, and fortunately, Darryl Kelley has shed some additional light on it.

“Wasn’t Justified” is about as factual a piece of music, as you will ever hear. There is no abstraction or countenance, but a responsible, and serious rendering of this case. Darryl Kelley has established himself as a sort of an artistic activist. The example he is setting is one to take note of, being so selfless in a sometimes selfish world. Our thoughts and sentiments are with the Brown family in the wake of the  loss of their beloved Andrew JR.
