The Goldbergs Season 9: Release Date, Cast, Story, Will It Happen?

Movies

The 1980s-set sitcom The Goldbergs is a long-running staple of the ABC programming line-up, and here’s what we know about a possible season 9. While much has been made of Stranger Things riding the ’80s nostalgia wave, The Goldbergs actually got there a few years earlier. That said, sitcoms that take viewers back to prior decades are a long-standing TV tradition that Goldbergs creator Adam Goldberg was only the latest to continue, following in the footsteps of shows like the ’50s-set Happy Days and ’70s-set That 70s Show.

Based on Goldberg’s own childhood experiences, The Goldbergs is expertly led by comedy veterans Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911) as Adam’s parents and, fitting its time period, has seen numerous ’80s pop culture favorites appear as guest stars. That eclectic list includes Charlie Sheen, Weird Al Yankovic, Rick Moranis, Anthony Michael Hall, and in perhaps the coolest get, Robert Englund actually playing A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger.

On May 5, 2021, The Goldbergs will wrap up its eighth season, making it one of the elder statesmen of ABC’s comedy line-up. Fans would surely love to see the show get a ninth season in the fall, but will that happen? Here’s what we know so far.

The Goldbergs Season 9 Renewal Status

The Goldbergs Adam

The Goldbergs has only three episodes left to air as part of season 8 which, like most TV shows, has seen production impacted by Coronavirus-related limitations. For now, ABC has yet to announce an official decision either way as to whether The Goldbergs has been renewed for season 9. That’s not necessarily a reason for fans to worry, though, as season 8 wasn’t picked up until May of 2020, and The Goldbergs is currently the highest-rated comedy on its network. Chances seem good for a renewal.

The Goldbergs Season 9 Release Date

The Goldbergs Beverly

Since The Goldbergs hasn’t yet been renewed, ABC has yet to announce a release date for season 9. However, like most broadcast TV sitcoms, The Goldbergs tends to premiere its seasons in fall and end in spring. Based on past premiere dates, fans can expect season 9 to premiere sometime in September or October 2021, should it get ordered.

The Goldbergs Season 9 Cast

The Goldbergs

With a show as successful and long-running as The Goldbergs, there’s no reason to expect any of the main cast not to return if season 9 gets picked by ABC. That’s of course with the major exception of George Segal, who played fan-favorite character Pops on the show. A Hollywood veteran of over 60 years, Segal had previously earned acclaim in the sitcom realm for his work on NBC’s Just Shoot Me, Segal sadly passed away due to complications from bypass surgery on March 23, 2021 at the age of 87. The final episode he filmed has since aired, and it remains to be seen how The Goldbergs‘ writers will deal with Pops going forward.

Considering the fact that season 8 of The Goldbergs has yet to air its finale, it’s unclear where the characters and storylines will stand going into a possible season 9. As mentioned above, one looming factor for season 9 will likely be addressing Segal’s death, presumably by killing off (not recasting) Pops too. Segal is a big loss to the show, and Pops’ absence will most definitely be felt by his family. Based on where season 8 currently stands though, it seems likely that Adam and Brea’s recently rocky relationship might meet its own end by season 9 or, by contrast, somehow be saved.
