The music more than the lyrics speaks volumes in the new track, “Biznasty” from genre-defying trio, The Dream Logic. Distinguished in their musicianship, the members of The Dream Logic have collaborated with an astounding who’s who of music for several decades. On the surface it might sound like a merry, mix matched blend of genres, but after a few listens, “Biznasty” explodes as a musical celebration. Unpredictable and highly enjoyable, “Biznasty” is serious musical business for The Dream Logic.

The Dream Logic is Charles Compo (Multi-instrumentalist and singer), Camille Gainer (drums, backing vocals) and Jerry Brooks (bass). Their diverse, yet connected, musical backgrounds have seen them perform with the likes of The Platters, Alicia Keys, Cyndi Lauper and D’Angelo. The intuitive grooves and fill spaces are incredible – “Biznasty” opens its arms to sounds of jazz, funk, soul, R&B and even world music. No boundaries or partitions arise – The Dream Logic draw imaginary lines in their colorful blend.
On the subject, this one had me perplexed. I think you could look at it from the political lens and think it’s about someone that does business in a nasty way, literally. I can see through, Compo sings. I think the statement here is that Compo sings from the perspective of society, and they know what’s happening, they see it with their own eyes. As a listener, “Biznasty” is more about the feel, the vibe of the song, than the lyrics. It’s time to remember, he continues, methodically and melodically. With a handful of words to choose from, a very catchy chorus (you’re biznasty), the lyrics were confined, but did the job. Compo sings pleasantly, and when Gainer harmonizes, it’s a stunning blend. They linger on the word ‘nasty’ longer than expected. But the real satisfying cocktail is the buzzing guitar, the trippy percussion groove and the bass guitar pleasure zones. The balancing act is triumphant, with eeks of jazz and hints of soul blending effortless with the rock and roll tones. I like “Biznasty” most for its unbridled energy. You feel alive listening to its spectacle of sounds.

Compo’s guitar whales – heavy reverb mixed with Brooks’ groove is a trip. They even combine for a bit of psychedelic parts, paving the way for Gainer’s jazzier shapes and soulful percussion. As the song progresses, you get a broader sense of their musicality – with the band switching tones and movement again. It’s a very modern sound, but it’s organic. This isn’t a bunch of button pushing and programming. This is raw talent, baked together. Fans of old school Ike & Tina Turner, Sly and The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder and vintage funk will dig “Biznasty”. They might want a bit out of the vocals, but the groove train runs the track super smoothly Strangely enough, I think the fans of Sugar Ray (might be a stretch, but the harmonies reminded me of “Fly”), Smile Smile, David Byrne and even Fatboy Slim will want to check out The Dream Logic’s “Biznasty”. Choose your own adventure – “Biznasty” keeps the meter running.
