Nobunny Admits to “Taking Advantage of Young Women and Teenage Girls,” Says He’s Quitting Music

Nobunny, the masked garage rock artist whose real name is Justin Champlin, released a statement today admitting to a history of sexual misconduct. He’s also announced that “Nobunny is over.” Find the full statement below.

Champlin opened his note alluding to the swarm of anonymous allegations facing Burger Records’ staff and artists which ultimately led to the label folding. Nobunny released multiple records on Burger. Champlin wrote, “I fucked up bad. I used my power and influence to take advantage of young women and teenage girls.”

“Everything I have ever done was consensual and seemingly enjoyed by both parties, but with age, gender, and power dynamics, I realize that consent isn’t always there if the power dynamic is off,” he wrote.

“I am truly sorry to anyone who was hurt by me,” he wrote, later adding, “I apologize to my friends and family and fans whom I have disappointed.” The post opens up about how he’s been sexually abused, that he’s in weekly therapy, and that he stopped drinking. “Not an excuse,” he wrote. “I am still guilty.” He ended the note by writing, “I know this will not be enough for some. I am trying my best and will continue to try harder.”

Nobunny’s debut album Love Visions was released in 2008. Nobunny’s last two albums, 2010’s First Blood and 2013’s Secret Songs were released by Goner Records. His Live at Third Man 12″ was released in 2010. He co-wrote and performed on multiple songs that appeared on Hunx and His Punx’s 2009 collection Gay Singles. Prior to releasing records as Nobunny, he was a member of the Okmoniks.

I don’t believe I have been publicly “called out” but it is def long past time for me to say something.

I fucked up bad.
I used my power and influence to take advantage of young women and teenage girls.
I have hurt people.
I let my “fame” go to my head.
Young money acting dummy.
My time is up.

I am truly sorry to anyone who was hurt by me.
Nobunny was supposed to be about love and silliness and it got dark.
I let people down.
I hurt people.
I am deeply ashamed.
I apologize to my friends and family and fans whom I have disappointed.

Everything I have ever done was consensual and seemingly enjoyed by both parties, but with age, gender, and power dynamics, I realize that consent isn’t always there if the power dynamic is off.
