Wonder Woman 1984’s Steve Trevor Is A 180 Twist From Original Movie

Chris Pine describes Wonder Woman 1984’s Steve Trevor as a 180-twist from the original movie. Debuting as Diana Prince’s (Gal Gadot) love interest in Patty Jenkins’ film, Wonder Woman, the actor is set to reprise his role as the valiant pilot in the upcoming sequel despite his tragic fate at the end of the 2017 project. Details regarding his return are still being tightly kept under wraps, but Pine is teasing what fans can expect from his character in the upcoming DC Extended Universe blockbuster.

As Wonder Woman 1984‘s release nears, Warner Bros. is ramping up their marketing efforts for the movie. Initially slated to release last November, the sequel was delayed to a June release to make it a summer offering just like its predecessor. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the studio was forced to push it again to an August release, however, considering the state of the global health crisis, it was further set back to an October debut. Regardless, both the fans and people who worked on the movie are excited about its imminent theatrical run.

Speaking with Total Magazine (via Heroic Hollywood), Pine talks about coming back for Wonder Woman 1984. While he can’t get into specific details about Trevor’s return, he reveals how this new version of his character is different from the one fans saw in Wonder Woman - saying that he’s more optimistic this time, instead of the worldly iteration from the original movie.

“What I will say about him is that he’s deeply, supremely excited. He’s excited to be back with Diana. He’s excited about this world. Tonally, what’s different is, he’s not world-weary. He’s not jaded. It’s a complete 180 from the tone of the character of the first one.

I thought it was a nice idea. It’s a brilliant move on [director] Patty [Jenkins’] part. That’s just one clear indication of a big tonal shift this time out. Patty, towards the end of the first one, had been marinating on an idea. So yeah, I had an idea that I would come back. I think she may have even started to break the story while we were promoting [the first film].”

Chris Pine and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984

Instead of keeping Trevor’s return a secret, Wonder Woman 1984 immediately confirmed that he’ll be back in the sequel. From there, marketing for the movie has fairly featured him, with Pine even taking part in interviews with the rest of crew, including newcomers such as Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Ann Minerva, aka Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord, who are set to play the movie’s villains. In hindsight, this is a clever move as it fuels people’s interest in the film – especially those who saw Wonder Woman and know what happened to Trevor at the end of it. What makes it more interesting is the fact that at the beginning of the trailers, Diana appears to be continuously mourning his death, meaning something in the sequel will happen that will into his return – perhaps, it’s even the catalyst that will kick off the events of the narrative.

While there’s a lot of theories regarding the specifics of Steve’s return in Wonder Woman 1984, fans have yet to see how his dynamic with Diana will change following their years of separation. As it is, Pine’s latest comments pose questions about what brought about this change in Trevor. Considering this, it’s also curious whether or not this will have any unexpected effect on how Diana views her first love – maybe even cast some doubts about how Trevor is really able to return.
