Animal Crossing Player Recreates Courage the Cowardly Dog Intro

Movies

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has cleverly recreated the intro sequence from popular ’90s animated show Courage the Cowardly Dog within the game. Animal Crossing: New Horizons released back in March and has proven to be an incredibly successful entry in the long-running series. In fact, the life simulator has already surpassed what Nintendo projected would be its lifetime sales goal and it’s the best-selling game in the entire series, which launched its first title back in 2001.

With this level of popularity and free-form customization options naturally comes creative recreations of pop culture. Whether it’s an iconic moment from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining to celebrate its anniversary or just Danny DeVito’s face, there are a lot of players out there making very unique and fun references to their favorite movies, television shows, and celebrities in-game. In the midst of such high-profile recreations, though, there are also players out there referencing more obscure or off-the-wall popular culture on their islands for others to enjoy in these weird times. Now, that includes the quirky and popular animated show Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Reddit user HomemadeMartian recently posted a recreation of the intro sequence from Courage the Cowardly Dog, brilliantly staged in Animal Crossing: New Horizons with the help of some clever editing. The brief homage includes the voices of characters, music, and even the bizarre style of the show, all starring in-game characters and players. The adorably hilarious video’s titled “Cookie, The Cowardly Dog,” as villager Cookie, who’s also a pink dog, stars as Courage. A YouTube video upload of the intro recreation can be seen below:

For fans of Courage the Cowardly Dog, this is a wonderful little throwback to the ’90s show, and it’s a surprisingly well-done little tribute. While plenty of players are creating their own original island layouts and pushing creativity to its absolute limits and inspiring others in the process, there is plenty of effort and ingenuity that goes into setting up smart pop culture references like this. In fact, some of the camera angles and scenic structure in here are not exactly easy feats to pull off within the game. There’s room for everyone and everything in a game like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is likely what has partially led to the title’s enormous popularity in a time where so many people are stuck at home.

The real question, though, is what’s next in the world of Animal Crossing pop culture references? Back to the Future scenes? Lord of the Rings? (That wouldn’t be surprising considering Elijah Wood’s recent adventures in the game.) Or will someone go so far as to recreate an entire movie using nothing but the game’s assets? Only time will tell, but the sky appears to be the limit when it comes to Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ vast and artistically inclined player base.
