A lesbian from Connecticut allegedly burned down her apartment building last weekend when she set hand sanitiser on fire and threw it at her girlfriend.
Destiny Waite threw the flaming bottle of hand sanitiser at her girlfriend during a domestic altercation, Hartford police said.
While most people were rescued from the building, one person was killed in the fire, NBC Connecticut reports. The man died due to smoke inhalation, according to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
Meanwhile, two children and two adults ended up in hospital in critical condition following the Sunday morning fire, with two of those victims being flown to hospital.
The 28-year-old lesbian is now facing a murder charge, the state’s attorney’s office said. She also faces an arson charge as well as four counts of first-degree assault.
Destiny Waite allegedly threw the flaming hand sanitiser following a row about money.
Destiny Waite’s attorney claimed that she was not in the apartment when the fire broke out and said her girlfriend had caused harm to herself.
She has been arrested and is being held on a $1 million dollar bond.
The burning bottle of sanitiser splashed against the wall and flames began to spread.
Oxygen.com reports that the woman set the bottle of hand sanitiser on fire and threw it at her girlfriend following a disagreement over money. The fire quickly spread through their second-level apartment and rapidly engulfed the entire building.
“The burning bottle of sanitiser splashed against the wall and flames began to spread,” an arrest warrant seen by the Hartford Courant said.
Her girlfriend was badly burned in the attack.
Destiny Waite’s girlfriend was reportedly badly burnt in the attack but managed to flee the building. The woman allegedly shouted death threats at her girlfriend after she threw the hand sanitiser.
“Some of the flaming sanitiser struck [the girlfriend’s] arms causing them to catch fire and burn,” the warrant added.
“Destiny then left the bedroom and the apartment while yelling, ‘I hope you die.’”
Prosecutors have said they have a “strong” case against Waite. She was arrested after the fire at her family’s apartment in Hartford. While she claimed she had been there all along, eyewitness accounts put her at the scene of the crime.
