“All That I Want,” the new single from Kings County, opens up with a slow-motion galloping vocal that immediately clues us in to the kind of rip-roar hurricane the band is about to unleash, but for as furious as this introduction is, it doesn’t hold a candle to what this sizzler of a song will do just moments into its first stanza. From the moment that the lead singer makes his debut in the track, there’s a sense of urgency to every word he croons, albeit stifled and tension-building when we first make our acquaintance with it. For Kings County, there’s only one way to make a good rock song – loud, proud and in your face as much as possible – and in “All That I Want,” they make it abundantly clear to audiences around the globe that they’re not about to bend to the will of a mainstream rock n’ roll sound that has left its most loyal fans in the dust lately. They’re all about explosiveness here, no matter what it takes to make it happen.

While the lyrics in this track are blunt and free of the pointless enigmas of a more passive alternative rock era, the music is always the most communicative element in “All That I Want,” engaging us with a mood in the harmony that bleeds into the riffing even during relative lulls in the chaos. The intro gets the embers started, the chorus stokes the flame into a hearty blaze, the guitars add more and more fuel until oxygen is almost impossible to come by, and by the time we reach the conclusion, it’s as though we’ve just escaped a bloodthirsty forest fire, somehow evading the sonic burns that seemingly everything else has endured. Whether they were going for a progressive look or not, all of the music on Kings County’s first record has a fluidity to it that makes every song feel like a chapter in a much larger story, with “All That I Want” culminating the album’s first act with a burst of adrenaline before lowering us into the treacherous metallic depths of the tracks that follow it.

They’ve got a long road ahead of them if they’re going to break into the mainstream in the next couple of years, but as far as strong starts are concerned, rock bands often do a lot worse than Kings County’s rookie release and its most important track. These Floridians aren’t concerned with appeasing the critics or kissing up to consumer demands; instead of rallying behind the same trends that countless rock groups are at the moment, they’re staying true to the original model, avoiding the pitfalls of excess and taking their time with experimentations in their sound. I hope to hear their second album soon, but if it takes them a little while to get back into the studio, I don’t think it would impede their professional momentum at all. Great things take time to develop and mature, and if one thing is for certain, it’s that this band has something really amazing going for them.
