Prince Harry, Meghan Markle & Royal Family Animated Series First Look

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and whole Royal Family get animated in a new satire series. The famous British monarchy has been the subject of much scrutiny as of late, with the departure of Harry, his wife Meghan and their infant son Archie from England.

Opting for a life away from the demands of royal life, Harry and Meghan have caused no small amount of controversy with their decision. The pair is currently in Canada and exactly what their new lives away from the monarchy will entail has yet to be determined. One thing is for certain, however – with Markle’s acting background and her homebase expected to be split between North America and the UK, Hollywood is very likely to come calling at some point. In fact, an invitation has already been extended to Markle and Harry to join the Netflix series The Crown, as well as a slightly satirical job posting from Daily Show host Trevor Noah via his Twitter account. And while the specifics of when and where Markle makes her return to television or film are not yet known, the uproar caused by the young couple’s move is unlikely to die down any time soon. Perhaps then, this is the perfect time for a television series that satirises the entire concept of the British monarchy.

This appears to be the thinking of HBO Max and Family Guy producer Gary Janetti as well. According to Deadline, Janetti’s royal family skewering animated series, The Prince, has just been greenlit by HBO Max. In addition to writing and producing the new series, Janetti will also voice the title character – 6-year-old Prince George of Cambridge, the son of Prince William and Princess Kate. Seen through the young tyke’s eyes, the royal family will be analyzed and scrutinized like never before, as George finds his way in life, killing time until his eventual succession as King. Speaking about their acquisition of the new series, HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, had the following to say:

“We’re so excited to bring the world Gary’s created on Instagram over to HBO Max, where our viewers can discover what his Instagram fans already know – that George can be hilarious, shocking, and surprisingly sweet. We can’t wait to see what Gary does with a bigger canvas to paint on than just a 1:1 square.”

The comment references Janetti’s various posts on Instagram, where he’s added photos of the royals to his account and offered captions from young George’s perspective. For those who have been following Janetti on Instagram, The Prince will be a much-appreciated extension of this brand of comedy. The new series will take place in and around the 775 rooms of Buckingham Palace and will also boast an impressive cast. Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom will take on voice duties of George’s father, William; Condola Rashad (Billions) will play Meghan Markle, Lucy Punch (A Series of Unfortunate Incidents) is Kate Middleton, Tom Hollander (Family Guy) will voice both Prince Phillip and Prince Charles, Alan Cumming (Instinct) voices George’s butler Owen, Frances de la Tour (The Collection) is Queen Elizabeth and Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) is Prince William.

As previously mentioned, now definitely seems to be the time for a series to come along and offer a humorous take on the royal family. There will likely be those who find the mere concept offensive, but given Janetti’s background on Family Guy and close working relationship with Seth MacFarlane, he’s more than familiar with a certain degree of controversy.
