Star Wars Begins 100 Day Countdown to The Rise of Skywalker

Movies

There are only 100 days left until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters. This year has seen multiple pop culture franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones, celebrate the end of a particular story, and there’s one more finale on tap before 2019 comes to a close. Not only does Star Wars 9 conclude the sequel trilogy that started with 2015’s The Force Awakens, it wraps up the classic Skywalker saga that’s been ongoing since 1977. There will, of course, be more Star Wars movies in the future, but they’ll be telling entirely separate narratives.

It goes without saying The Rise of Skywalker is poised to be a massive cinematic event and will definitely be the movie to see during the holiday season. And though there’s still a bit of time remaining before Lucasfilm kicks their marketing efforts into overdrive, they are in the thick of promotion with a theatrical teaser trailer and D23 special look showcasing tantalizing new footage to fuel multiple fan theories. Viewers have been counting down the days until The Rise of Skywalker’s release for months, and now Star Wars itself is getting in on that action.

A post on the Star Wars UK Twitter page reminded people that there are just 100 days remaining until Star Wars 9 debuts in theaters. Check it out for yourself in the space below:

Star Wars will most assuredly dominate the zeitgeist over the next couple of months. October sees the Triple Force Friday event, where the latest wave of Star Wars merchandise hits shelves. That month should also see a new Star Wars 9 trailer, coinciding with tickets going on sale. That was the marketing strategy for both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, so there’s little incentive for Lucasfilm to change things up now. And in the middle of the Rise of Skywalker hype, Star Wars is going to make the leap to live-action TV with The Mandalorian on Disney+. So, over the next 100 days, there will be plenty of new content for fans to eagerly check out.

Last year, Star Wars hit a speed bump when Solo: A Star Wars Story became the franchise’s first commercial bomb. A weak marketing campaign was more to blame than franchise fatigue, but a case can be made Star Wars will benefit from having an extended period of time out of the spotlight. By the time The Rise of Skywalker premieres, it will have been 19 months since a new Star Wars movie played in theaters, and everyone from casual viewers to die-hard enthusiasts will want to see how the saga comes to a close. As it should be, a new Star Wars movie arriving feels like a major occasion and a huge pop culture event.
