ANOHNI and the Johnsons have shared the third and final preview of the forthcoming LP, My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross. The latest single is titled “Why Am I Alive Now?,” and Hunter Schafer directed its accompanying video. Check it out below.
“I started listening to ANOHNI in high school, so it’s a huge honor to help her build a visual world for ‘WAIAN,’” Schafer said in a statement. “This music video was an honest attempt to answer the question that ‘WAIAN’ begs, ‘Why Am I Alive Now?’ I wanted to focus on the idea of finding sisterhood in a world that does nothing to help—I hope the direction, choreography, and tone conveys a small piece of that journey.”
ANOHNI will perform live on her YouTube channel tomorrow (July 6) at 3 p.m. Eastern during an album playback experience. She’ll also have an on-camera conversation with Hunter Schafer.
Rob Moose, who’s worked with Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, Miley Cyrus, and more, plays strings on “Why Am I Alive Now?” My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, which is out on Friday, July 7, is ANOHNI’s first album with the Johnsons in more than a decade. She announced the record with “It Must Change” in May. She more recently shared “Sliver of Ice,” which was inspired by ANOHNI’s late friend Lou Reed.
